Pure glassy conditions made for some spectacular whale watching this morning! 7 blue whales, including a cow/calf pair. The calf was so small, about 15 feet long, it had to be a newbie! Mother was quite shy, so we kept our distance and didn't get any photos of the calf. But we did get great photos of some of the other whales. Also on the menu was a huge mola mola, some common dolphins and some Risso's dolphins. Oh yeah, and some whale p**p!

Saw this very odd looking jellyfish while out Whale Watching this morning. Was unable to identify it, so if any of my naturalist friends could help me out, I would be very grateful!

Looked like 4 swimming in tandem. Maybe a foot long each.

Beautiful conditions for whale watching this morning. We found 2 blue whales & 2 fin whales hanging out together along with some very lively common dolphins. One of the fin whales had a very odd looking dorsal fin, almost looked like it had been bitten.
Lots of flukes and very accommodating whales.

The blue whales are here in San Diego, so if you would like the opportunity to see them, give us a call at 310-974-2176 or book on line at www.offshoreblueadventures.com. It is early in the season and we do have lots of space available!

Had an awesome two Whale Watching trips yesterday. Our morning trip took us far offshore where we encountered two fast moving fin whales and several pods of common dolphins. The fins whales were living up to their nick name "greyhound of the ocean" and due to sea conditions we soon lost them. We headed back closer to shore where reports of dolphins and bait were coming over the radio. Then a call went out that two fin whales had arrived to feed on the bait fish. We were able to catch up to them and watch as they circled and surface fed.

We headed back to that same spot and the two whales were still feeding on the bait fish. They were curious and mugged us and the other boats there several times, twice passing under our boat, and surfacing quite near by! (PS. All of the boats were sitting still in neutral while this was happening).

Researchers say three major mortality events, including one that’s ongoing, stem from a lack of food caused by climate change ice changes.

We were so happy to find that Junior, our little resident grey whale was still alive and well! When the news of a juvenile grey whale had washed up on a LaJolla beach we were devastated! He had been hanging around since December, delighting our guests with his silly antics. But yesterday, there he was!! just off Sunset cliffs near the kelp.
There were a lot of boats around him, so Capt.Jules decided to head out further west, where we found a group of 4 northbound grey whales, that gave us quite a show! On our way back in, we stopped to see Junior, & we were the only boat there. He must have been a bit tired, & I only got one quick picture of his back as he dove under (last picture). But that's OK. We are so glad he is still with us!

Looks like we will be staying at the dock for a few days!
Synopsis for the far Southern California coast...
At 2 AM, a 990 mb low was off the coast of the Pacific Northwest
and a 1004 mb high was over southern Nevada. Westerly winds
gusting to 25 kt will continue into Saturday morning. There is a
slight chance of thunderstorms early this morning. Westerly winds
will decrease Saturday. South to southeast winds will increase
and seas will build late Sunday and Monday, possibly generating
hazardous boating conditions.

Incredible Whale Watching trip today. We were tipped off that the Orcas were back in San Diego waters, and when we arrived on scene the orcas were attacking and harassing an adult grey whale. It was quite brutal, but the whale eventually escaped and the orcas turned their attentions to a pod of common dolphins that inadvertently swam right up to the orcas!

Calm seas and beautiful conditions as we headed out to on both of our trips today! A report that the Southern Tropical orca where making their way south, took us up the coast about 20
miles where we caught up to them on both trips.
Our afternoon trip ended with an incredible sunset, to the
delight of all our guests!
These orcas are a rare sight, so book now for our last chance before the weather changes.
