Juvenile Court Book Club, Inc.

Juvenile Court Book Club is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes literacy among youth in San Diego's juvenile detention facilities.

JCBC brings volunteers into San Diego's juvenile detention centers for monthly book club meetings and tutoring. We work with these at-risk teens to develop their reading skills and encourage a love of reading that will help them as they pursue their education and enter the working world. We also coordinate author visits, book signings, visiting performers, speakers, film screenings, and field trip

s. The books the students read serve as a springboard for discussions of real-life challenges and experiences, and the teens bring great insight to every discussion. Our trained volunteer tutors work with students one-on-one at the Girls' Rehabilitation Facility, helping with all academic subjects, including English/Language Arts, reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary, basic math, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, GED exam preparation, and California High School Exit Exam preparation. JCBC was founded in 1996 by Judge Maria Arroyo (Ret.), Juvenile Court Referee, with support and encouragement from Judge James Milliken (Ret.).

Juvenile Court Book Club, Inc. delivered gift bags of books and cookies today for the 200+ teens in juvenile detention in San Diego County. Still to be delivered - gift bags for the 25 or so girls in the county's SAFE Program. Merry Bookmas!

Celebrate International Literacy Day! September 8 is International Literacy Day, and September is Literacy Month!

Since 1967, International Literacy Day celebrations have taken place annually around the world to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society. Despite progress made, literacy challenges persist with at least 773 million young people and adults lacking basic literacy skills today.

Here’s what you can do on this day, in this week, during this month, any time!
• Volunteer to be a tutor for a child or adult.
• Read to children at schools, libraries, and other community locations.
• Read to seniors who may be alone or have vision loss.
• Read to your children. Ask your children to read to you.
• Dedicate one-hour hour every day to family reading.
• Create incentives for older siblings to read to younger siblings.
• Donate time, treasure, talent to JCBC (http://juvenilecourtbookclub.com/donate) or another San Diego Council on Literacy-affiliated program (https://www.literacysandiego.org/affiliated-programs/).
• Sponsor a school.
• Build a Little Free Library in your neighborhood or restock the Little Free Library near you.
• Donate new or like-new books for children in low-income communities.
• Donate to Dolly Parton’s “Imagination Library” program (https://www.literacysandiego.org/sponsors/donate-today/).
• Donate to the San Diego Council on Literacy (https://www.literacysandiego.org/sponsors/donate-today/).
