FEAR HAS NO FUTURE
I think often what we're really afraid of is the unknown. We don't carry out the scenario of our fears and so the default unconscious feeling is that the fear will result in "the end of the world." However, if we begin to deconstruct our fears, they lose their power over us.
I once coached a Marine - who was training to be a Drill Seargeant - through his fears. He was terrified that he would fail his training, and his stress level was making that outcome more likely. I asked, "Well, if you failed, what's the worst thing that could happen...would you just be transferred to another job in the marines?" "No," he responded, "If I fail, that's it. I'm out completely." So I asked, "Well, if that happened, what would you do?" After a pause, he said, "I guess I'd move back home." "And then what?" I asked. "I'd probably go back to school," he said. And then he smiled. "That really wouldn't be that bad," he admitted.
In those few short minutes, the worry had left his face. He looked lighter, peaceful. He was still just as committed to be a Drill Seargeant - he was very passionate about that leadership role - but the fear was gone.
What fears have a hold on you? Imagine the worse case scenario and keep asking yourself, "And if that happens, then what?" As you do so, the power the fear has over you will become less and less until it finally disappears - because you've now created a survivable scenario where previously a future did not exist.
