Coastal Angler Tagging Cooperative

Coastal Angler Tagging Cooperative We are using two tagging methods to accomplish this: Floy tagging (tag-recapture) and acoustic telemetry. Thank you!

We created a cooperative fisheries research initiative between marine scientists, the recreational fishing community, fisheries managers, and non-profit organizations to improve upon our knowledge of the biology of marine fishes in southern California. The goal of this research is to measure population size, mortality, and movement patterns of all three bass species (calico bass, sand bass, and sp

otted bay bass) in southern California. Our efforts are primarily focused in the San Diego coastal area, but we are expanding to include Newport Bay and Long Beach Harbor as well. We invite anyone who is interested to come out on our tagging charters for free, and participate in the research. Contact us if you would like to be added to the email list for charter updates.

Another successful year of San Diego CCFRP in the books! On August 23rd, the Scripps Oceanography team finished the year strong in the Swami’s SMCA with a total of 121 fish, 56 caught in the MPA and 65 caught in the reference sites. Here’s some highlights!

Another great week of sampling for Scripps CCFRP in the Swami’s State Marine Conservation Area! Although overcast and rainy at times, ocean conditions were wonderfully flat on August 8th and August 9th, making for smooth sailing aboard the Sea Star with Captain Joe and deckhand Bobby. Between the two trips, the team caught a total of 262 fishes, 212 inside the MPA and 50 in nearby reference sites. Our catch consisted of 19 different species, including a Cabezon and a large 110 cm California Halibut caught by Joe C. (not pictured) ! We continued to collect samples for our eDNA (environmental DNA) pilot program and are excited to start processing samples soon! Enjoy some highlights from our time on the water! CCFRP sampling in San Diego has begun! On July 12th, UC San Diego CCFRP science crew, captains, deckhands, and volunteer anglers had a great day on the Outer Limits, catching a total of 184 fish across 18 different species. In addition to our hook-and-line surveys, this year we are also launching our new eDNA pilot project! eDNA (or environmental DNA) is DNA shed by organisms into the marine environment. By pairing eDNA water samples with CCFRP hook-and-line surveys, we hope to identify an even greater diversity of fishes and better understand the capabilities of this emerging sampling technique! Stay tuned for more details about this new side project! Thank you to our great volunteers who helped us out this week, and our wonderful photographer Ashlynn C.
