in History, 1791, the Nation’s capital was named after President . Formerly referred to as Federal City, Washington, DC, would become the permanent home of the U.S. government in 1800, just months after the death of its namesake President.

In the preceding decade, the seat of the U.S. government alternated residences. After operating out of Philadelphia during the and the first years of the government established by the , the Pennsylvania Mutiny of 1783 forced the government to flee. The government migrated to Princeton, Annapolis, and Trenton before eventually settling on New York City in 1785.

When Philadelphia reentered the spotlight as the home of the in 1787, the location of a new capital became the subject of contentious debate. Southerners, led by and , sought a capital closer to home that would be attentive to agricultural interests and less susceptible to Northern abolitionist sentiments. In a bargain with Treasury Secretary , the two Southerners received Hamilton’s support for their capital on the River in exchange for congressional votes for Hamilton’s financial plan, which would have the Federal Government assume the states’ Revolutionary War debts.

Following these negotiations, passed the Residence Act of 1790 that established the location of the new capital and designated Philadelphia as the temporary capital until construction was completed. In early 1791, President Washington appointed Pierre Charles L’Enfant to begin planning the city. envisioned a grid system with the Capitol at its center, and incorporated boulevards akin to those of his native . When the city was given its name that September, the city’s commissioners also named the federal district “Columbia”, the feminine form of “Columbus” that had been popularized as a name for the U.S. in patriotic songs.
