Our Story
We are "The Friends of the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater" formed in 2005 as a sub-committee of the Friends of McLaren Park. In January 2010, we became a fiscally-sponsored group of San Francisco Parks Alliance where we are listed as "The Friends of the AMP - the Amphitheater at McLaren Park." We are the OFFICIAL "Friends of the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater"
We are not affiliated with a similar-sounding group Friends of Jerry Garcia Amphitheatre
( minus "THE") registered In January 2017 as a 501c3 charity.
We advocate and work with neighbors, park users, city government, sponsors and funders to improve the use and condition of the amphitheater. We work on infrastructure improvements, permit fees, programming, safety, funding and city and community support for SF's only outdoor Greek-style amphitheater, encouraging musicians, artists & producers to come and present at the beautiful Jerry Garcia Amphitheater.
Friends of the AMP is a member of McLaren Park Collaborative which includes park, community, neighbor and interest groups all working together to improve all of John McLaren park by holding volunteer park workdays, events, meetings and advocating for the park.
In addition to our success in obtaining reduced fees for community events and a safety and docent program, we offer events and programs, including 5 years of "Saturday in the Park-McLaren" concerts, free family-focused entertainment on stage at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater.
Our members include the co-founders of Jerry Day FACE/Friends and Advocates of Crocker Amazon and the Excelsior, the Friends of McLaren Park, who, with FACE, successfully named the Amphitheater the "Jerry Garcia Amphitheater" and held the 2005 dedication concert in honor of their work, Help McLaren Park, advocates for playgrounds, Save McLaren Park, advocates for nature, and many others.
Friends of the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater/Friends of the AMP won the SF Office of the Mayor's Neighborhood Empowerment Network's 2014 Outstanding Park Volunteer Group for our work activating the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater and bringing friends and families together to enjoy free music in the Amphitheater.
Please also visit our other pages "Live from the AMP” and "McLaren Park Collaborative SF" for up-to-date information about events in the amphitheater and improvements in and around the park.
"Making our community the best place to live!" is our motto for promoting the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater.
