Incredible French Japanese keiseki meal at Enuma Station Bistro. Each course was better than the next. Subtle flavors with stand-out tastes and textures. Kanazawa Beer, Yuzu on the rocks, seahorse mackerel sashimi, roasted corn soup, seared flounder with grilled zucchini & eggplant, panko crusted pork & steak with asparagus tempura mushroom, and melon soup with mango sorbet.

The husband and wife team running the restaurant could not have been lovelier.

Urushi is the art of traditional lacquerware. We visited the home and studio of a 3rd generation urushi artisan. Not only did we learn about the traditional process from obtaining the sap to carving the wooden object to layering, painting and polishing, but we were also served green tea and snacks. The objects and art around the room and the cups and plates we ate from were all antiques, some dating back over 600 years!

I can't even begin to tell you how wonderful our kaiseki meal was tonight. Gorgeous presentation, ridiculously fresh, locally grown, beautiful flavors, and lovely staff. We even learned that our waitress moved to Japan from China when she was 16, so the kids were able to communicate with her in Mandarin! Oh, and our picky kids tried nearly everything!!

My sister-in-law jokingly told the concierge at their ryokan-style inn, Nazuna Kyoto Gosho, that her husband is a beer sommelier. And today he presented them with a lovely note and 4 different Japanese beers. Even before this, they were loving everything about their stay!

If you're craving a little Italian, we can vouch for Pizzeria Mama in Arashiyama. Excellent pizzas (kids enjoyed margherita but the adults raved about the eggplant), salads, pasta, and a variety of other mains, but the matcha cheesecake with raspberry compote is a must. They use seasonal local ingredients, so the menu changes.

Private mochi making class with a mochi master monk. The grain for mochi is different from that of regular rice. The rice must be soaked for a day and then steamed for 40 minutes. You mash the rice when it is very hot; once it cools, it becomes harder to do. Then you pound the rice until it is sticky and you can no longer discern individual grains. Then roll it in flour so that you can handle it. Such a difference having fresh mochi!

We had a mochi making class in a beautiful machiya, a traditional merchant's home. Now owned by 3 generations of a private family, our gorgeous host is pictured in the first photo. The family has a fan shop in the front, a mochi making enterprise in the middle, and a tea house in the back. After our class, we had a tour of the house.

It was fascinating learning about matcha and having a tea ceremony with a tea master who lives on the grounds of Daitoku-ji Temple, a Zen Buddhist temple. He is one of 11 tea masters living and working here and he is the youngest.

Matcha is the ground, powdered form of green tea and since you're consuming the entire leaf, you benefit from more and a stronger concentration of the beneficial nutrients and antioxidants.

Super friendly wait staff and locals.

I'm finding it pretty hard to find bad meals in Japan. Even the humble, casual izakaya has terrific food. Sashimi rice, burger (which is actually an incredibly tender large pork and beef meatball with cheese and savory sauce), broiled eggplant, crispiest of gyozas, and not pictured: tofu & vegetable salad, caprese, and veggie tempura.

The izakaya is also great if you have picky kids because there's usually a variety of items on the menu. Do keep in mind that everyone must order a drink.

Bonus is that the current exchange rate is advantageous for American travelers -- great food at great prices!
