11 Facts You May Not Know About San Francisco 🤔

1. San Francisco’s iconic Golden Gate Bridge isn’t actually golden—it’s painted “International Orange” to stand out in the fog.

2. The city is built on more than 50 hills, with famous ones like Nob Hill, Russian Hill, and Twin Peaks offering incredible views.

3. The fortune cookie was actually invented in San Francisco, not China, and you can see how they’re made in Chinatown’s Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory.

4. San Francisco was almost completely destroyed by a massive earthquake and fire in 1906, which led to the city being rebuilt from the ground up.

5. Cable cars are a moving national landmark, and San Francisco is the only city in the world with manually operated cable cars still in regular operation.

6. Alcatraz Island, once home to the infamous federal prison, housed notorious criminals like Al Capone and "Birdman" Robert Stroud.

7. The San Francisco Bay is home to its own species of jellyfish, known as the Pacific sea nettle, which thrives in the bay’s cool, salty waters.

8. The city’s Painted Ladies, a row of colorful Victorian houses, are one of the most photographed spots and appeared in the opening of 'Full House'.

9. The world’s crookedest street, Lombard Street, has eight sharp hairpin turns and is a favorite stop for tourists.

10. Fisherman’s Wharf is famous for its resident sea lions, which took over Pier 39 after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and have stayed ever since.

11. San Francisco’s fog is so famous it even has a name—locals call it “Karl the Fog,” and it’s especially thick in summer!

Good luck runners on Bay to Breakers tomorrow!

It happened long ago on January 1, 1912 when the Bay to Breakers was first held. It was intended as a precursor to the world-class athletic events being planned for the 1915 Pan Pacific International Exposition. The photo shows runners on their way up the Hayes Street Hill.
