OUR INSPIRATION
Duma is Swahili for Cheetah, the lightning fast and agile predator that inspired Duma Explorer founder, Stacy Readal. While the lion is regarded as the king of the African savannah, the graceful, fleet-footed cheetah is the fastest land animal. SAFARI GUIDES
Each of our guides has at least seven years experience as a safari guide in Northern Tanzania, meaning you will be guided by

knowledgeable and skilled tourism professionals throughout your trip. We offer many kinds of guides and support staff during our mountain climbs and safaris. During a standard or luxury safari, explore Tanzania's parks with a Duma Explorer driver-guide; or during a budget camping safari, travel with both a driver-guide and chef. MOUNTAIN CREW
Our passionate and highly trained mountain crew totals about 150 people, including guides, assistant guides, cooks and porters. Many of our guides and cooks began their careers with us as porters and have been part of Duma Explorer since we started in 2004. Our mountain guides each have a minimum seven years experience hiking Kilimanjaro, while most of our porters, assistant guides and cooks have been climbing for at least five years. Duma's chief guides and most assistant guides are Wilderness First Responder certified. Many of our cooks and porters have first-aid training. During a Kilimanjaro climb, hike with at least one head guide, an assistant guide, cook and several porters.

We (Alika Africa) have joined Friends of Serengeti as a travel partner. Friends of Serengeti is a program of Serengeti Watch, whose mission is to build lasting protection of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem by and for the people of East Africa.

Friends of Serengeti is an organization for tour companies and travelers that want to make a difference. We make an annual donation to maintain our membership and travelers are encouraged to make a $50 per person donation to support conservation, education, and programs to those living within and around protected natural areas.

This week we hosted Sarah de Lagarde on Mount Kilimanjaro. Sarah first climbed Kilimanjaro with us in 2022. A month later, Sarah was involved in a London Tube accident which resulted in the amputation of her right arm and leg.

This week, Sarah made history by becoming the first female double amputee to summit Kilimanjaro. We are very proud to have helped Sarah on her journey to the top of Kilimanjaro! Read Sarah's inspiring story on the BBC link below. Thanks to Wayfairer Travel Agency for coordinating Sarah's two climbs with us! Check out this cat on a CAT in Ngorongoro Crater! With the end of the rains the parks are grading game drive roads and it looks like this lion decided to nap on this Caterpillar road grader. Thanks to our guide, Justin Mushi, for sharing this photo!

Wondering what the Mto wa Mbu Village Tour is like? Janet, a 2023 guest, has shared a video of the experience with us. When transferring from Tarangire to Ngorongoro, we often add a stop in Mto wa Mbu for a village tour. Learn about farming, banana beer making, tinga tinga art, and much more! Thanks to Janet for sharing.

Read this article for an account of the Maasai evictions from their homelands in Tanzania. Experiencing Maasai life is one of the highlights of any trip to Tanzania. We proudly support camps that have had a long relationship with and support for local communities such as Isoitok Camp, Kisima Ngeda, Mysigio Camp, and Lake Natron Camp. One of our all-time favorite trips in Tanzania is hiking with the Maasai along the Great Rift Valley from Ngorongoro Conservation Area to Lake Natron. It is an eye-opening experience for anyone who does it. Isoitok Camp Manyara

Check out our post about Mkomazi National Park and Mkomazi Wilderness Retreat. This park and camp are perfect for the seasoned safari traveler. Off the beaten path, you will be virtually alone in the park with loads of wildlife and up-close interactions with Black rhino. We visited in June of 2023 and did not see a single other safari vehicle during our time there. Unique to Mkomazi, you fall asleep to the sound of trumpeting elephants instead of roaring lions or laughing hyenas which is more common in Northern Tanzania. Karibuni sana Mkomazi!

Mkomazi National Park is an off-the-beaten-path destination in Northern Tanzania. See large herds of elephant and eland in this park as well as wildlife not seen in other Tanzanian parks including gerenuk, lesser kudu, and oryx. Mkomazi Wilderness Retreat is a beautiful luxury camp overlooking a lar
