The Crosstown Transport project was an ambitious idea from the mid-20th century aimed at improving wastewater management in San Francisco. This proposed tunnel would have transported stormwater and sewage across the city more efficiently. However, the project never moved forward due to its high costs and technical challenges, leaving the city to rely on existing infrastructure instead.

Though it wasn’t realized, the project reflects San Francisco’s long-standing commitment to innovation in urban planning and environmental management—a legacy you can see in the systems and landmarks scattered throughout the city today!
