This is an LG E6 OLED paired with a Teranex Mini SDI-HDMI LUT box. Programmed using Calman Ultimate software + Klein Instruments K10-A colorimeter (w/custom display profile.)

The 2022 Sony A95K QD-OLED television tuned up beautifully, and I especially appreciated its zippy processor that felt significantly faster during the process.

The owner never used Google TV, and I used a throwaway email to log in long enough to download Calman for BRAVIA - a bit of a hassle. That app allows my calibration software to directly control the television + it enables a more granular white balance setup (10-point vs 20-point.)

I recently spent some quality time performing a look-up table (LUT) calibration of this SmallHD Cine 13 professional monitor. The Cine 13 features a rugged and portable design (13-inch screen) with many input types and signal visualizations that content creators need during production. The measured max luminance of the Cine 13 exceeded 1500 nits, and it calibrated for BT.709/2.4 gamma to reference levels.

If a full-color digital billboard has ever blinded you at night, that display combines individual red, blue, and green LEDs for each pixel. Up close, it would look pixelated, but if you make the LEDs small enough, you end up with something like these prototype Samsung Micro LED displays. The brightness of the picture was incredible (~5000 nits!) The contrast was superb since LEDs can turn completely off for "perfect" black levels. The color purity was excellent, and inorganic LEDs tend to be very robust light sources. While large-format micro LED displays remain an ultra-premium option for home theater, it's good to see this tech in a wide variety of screen sizes (50-inches to 140-inches pictured.)

Samsung's 2023 quantum dot OLED (QD-OLED) tech on display at CES 2023 was pure eye candy. The company claims that an updated blue OLED material improves display efficiency by up to 30%. This claim seems to be born out in a side-by-side comparison with its 2022 TV.

Also new for 2023 is a 77-inch QD-OLED TV screen size and the addition of upgraded audio and an external input box for the upcoming S95C 4K OLED television.

I also spent some eyes-on time with the new 49-inch Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 PC monitor (32:9/240Hz) - incredible color saturation, clarity, and contrast from all of Samsung's OLED offerings! However, it remains unclear what graphics card can drive the G9's ~16.6M pixels at 240Hz w/HDR 😎

Hisense and Samsung introduced new 8K RGB laser projectors at CES 2023. The image quality appeared seamless, and these bigger screens are a good use of 33+ million pixels!

Hisense confirmed its projector used the new 0.94-inch 8K DLP chipset from Texas Instruments.

Both projectors are expected later this year, and pricing has yet to be announced.

I wouldn't consider a home theater TV purchase that didn't feature quantum dot tech's potential for near laser-like color quality. LCD and OLED TVs continue to push brightness levels to new heights, and the same must happen for accurate, life-like color saturation.

We recommend all OLED owners get at least 120 hours of display use before calibration. Besides a general break-in period for the OLED materials, this also provides time to exchange the display, if necessary, before any calibration work.

*Most LG TVs will display the Total Power On Time in the General > About This TV > TV Information screen (or thereabouts.)

I recently worked on a 2020 LG CX OLED with ~5200 hours of usage. The default Cinema preset had impressively low color errors, and HDR10 playback tuned up beautifully.

I recently spent an afternoon calibrating a 77-inch LG C2 OLED evo television. It was appreciably brighter than previous C-series OLEDs I've worked on, and its new composite fiber frame construction provides a 20-47% weight reduction depending on screen size.

For a 55 or 65-inch 4K TV with a premium viewing experience, the Samsung S95B is a unique OLED television that uses quantum dots to produce visually impressive color purity. Every pixel of an OLED screen can be individually switched on and off for perfect contrast. However, this TV would be best for rooms with some control over ambient lighting - nearby bright light sources can sometimes make the S95B's quantum dots glow when they shouldn't, affecting black levels!

Consider ditching a cable/satellite subscription and putting the cash you save into better internet service. For "live" TV, a service like YouTube TV starts at $65/mo for up to 6 accounts + unlimited DVR! Sports and 4K add-on packages are available too.
