The Spring Lake Dam, one of Texas' oldest dams, was Constructed in 1849 by General Edward Burleson. Acquired by Texas State University in 1994, the area has transformed into an educational center and ecological preserve. The dam has seen many modifications over its 175-year lifespan, and it continues to play a crucial ecological role, providing habitat for eight endangered species in the diverse San Marcos River ecosystem.
