See Shawn Mullins this Thursday night at the City Summer Concert Series at Kiwanis Park!

City of Sanford NC Parks

The City Summer Concert Series wraps up with a free performance by National Recording Artist Shawn Mullins at Kiwanis Park this Thursday from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Mullins is recognized as one of the most prolific songwriters in the music industry. Mullins, catapulted onto the National music scene after a series of indie releases. Mullins’ critical and commercial breakthrough came when 1998 Soul’s Core shot him to fame on the strength of Grammy-nominated No. 1 hit, “Lullaby” followed by AAA/Americana No. 1 hit “Beautiful Wreck” from 2006’s 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor.

Soul’s Core produced several radio worthy hits and remains a popular disc to come out of the nineties. It also produced became a radio and video hit-the video for “Lullaby,” directed by Roger Pistole, actress Dominique Swain appeared.

Mullin’s song, “Shimmer” was used in promotion of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and was included on the Dawson’s Creek soundtrack. His co-write “All in My Head” from 2008’s Honeydew was featured in episode one of the hit TV sitcom “Scrubs.” This song was written after an e-mail was sent out by the producers of the new show searching for a theme song. Mullins wrote a demo version and sent it in within 24 hours. It wasn’t selected as the theme song, but the demo version was used in a season one episode of the series.

With huge crossover appeal, Mullins also co-wrote the Zac Brown Band’s No. 1 country tune “Toes.” In early 2002, he formed supergroup The Thorns with Matthew Sweet and Pete Droge. “No Blue Sky” from the resulting album, is a modern-day classic.

“We’ve had a tremendous summer with some incredible talent,” said City Councilmember Charles Taylor. “To have Shawn Mullins, one of the best songwriters in the business to cap our summer off as our National Act is certainly a treat. He is one incredible talent, and we are honored to have him on our stage.”

For the 20th anniversary of his breakthrough album, Shawn revisited the music of Soul’s Core by recording two new versions of the album. He calls this Soul’s Core Revival. This is not a remix or a remaster of the original, but rather brand new recordings with new arrangements of the songs – one album is stripped down solo performances, some on guitar, some on piano and maybe one a ca****la and the second is a new studio recording with his full band, Soul Carnival.

Featured food Trucks for Thursday’s night performance are Lazy J’s Concessions LLC and Millie's Mama Bakes-Official.

Between God, Country, and family there are three things that Pickett will always standup for as evident on his bus. The bible verse, Joshua 1:9, featured on the bus provides peace and comfort while on the road.

Pickett credits much of his success to his sponsors and fans “I am grateful for all the continued support and encouragement as I travel up and down the road from not only from my fans but my sponsors, said Pickett. “My sponsors enable me to keep my tour bus on the road and provide me the opportunity to travel, play music and do the thing that I love.”

Fun or Interesting Facts:
The MixTapes formed in 2016 when friends from a previous band were looking for something new, and Hager auditioned to be the lead singer of their new endeavor. Sharing love and talents across all music genres, the set list for this new group grew into an impressive mix. Up next was time to name the band. As they looked at the set list, Hager was inspired by her middle school students and their use of the phrase “dropping a mixtape.” So, the band agreed, they would be The MixTapes.

Wendy Hager returns to her hometown of Sanford. Hager, who now teaches in Raleigh was a product of Lee Senior High School Class of 2003. Before forming MixTapes, Hager performed with Ol’ North State and Raw Honey. Each member has years of experience and played with several bands around the Triangle.

An Undiscovered Slice of Heaven

If you find yourself traveling through the heart of our state, you’ll come across one of the most charming, vibrant and delightfully unexpected places in North Carolina. At its core is a thriving small city where nearly a century and a half ago only two railroads crossed.

It’s a place where progressive leaders have fought hard to shape a community with a vision for the future while honoring its past. A place where you can escape drama and enjoy a peaceful weekend drive.

There’s a conviction that the arts are food for the soul and should occasionally be paired with a nice red wine or pale ale.

If you want to push yourself hard, or not at all — we have what you’re looking for. With recreation opportunities in abundance, from golf and mountain biking, to baseball and kayaking.
