On August 7, 1789, Congress approved an act for the “establishment and support of Lighthouse, Beacons, Buoys, and Public Piers.” Two hundred years later Congress designated August 7 as National Lighthouse Day!

In case you need a pick-me-up: 9,179 sea turtle hatchlings have emerged on Sanibel and Captiva this year to date (9,139 loggerhead and 40 leatherback)!

In addition, SCCF has documented 819 sea turtle nests on the islands:

🐢 816 loggerhead nests
🐢 2 green turtle nests
🐢 1 leatherback nest

Please turn off or shield all beach-front lights after 9 p.m. and refrain from using cell phone lights or flashlights on the beach after dark to prevent hatchling disorientation. Also fill in holes, level sandcastles, and remove beach furniture and trash to help ensure hatchlings make their way safely to the water!

Amazing story!! What a happy ending!

A dog was rescued after being found paddling a mile and a half off the shore of the beach. A couple spotted the pup while on a dinner cruise.
