Dear Guests of Island Vacations,

Our team continues to contact guests in chronological order based on arrival dates. For those inquiring about your refunds, we are now issuing checks for May 2023 arrivals. We appreciate your patience in this process, and our team at Island Vacations continues to do an incredible job under difficult circumstances.

Unfortunately, the island still has a long way to go to be restored to a semblance of how we all remember it. The speed at which the causeway was restored in many ways lulled us into thinking and believing that we may have only been a few months away from the island appearing intact again. Unfortunately, the island still has a long way to go to be restored to a semblance of how we all remember it. The vast majority of the properties on the island are in the process of substantial rebuilds/remodels/renovations. The good news is that the size of the debris piles is beginning to wane, and materials are flowing onto the island to begin restoration in earnest. As the rest of the island slowly recovers, repairs to the building exterior at our office on Periwinkle have commenced. We also begun a comprehensive remodel of the office interior last week, and our hope is to have the team back in our new-look office in early March.

Despite all the challenges and painstaking amounts of patience required, it is still too soon to commit to a return to “normal” operations. Rest assured, we will continue to keep you updated with developments, as we are looking forward to that time as much as you are.

To Our Loyal Customers,

We appreciate the kind words and messages of support we have received since Hurricane Ian wreaked havoc on our beautiful Island. It has been less than 8 weeks since the storm, but in many ways, it seems so much longer.

This is undoubtedly not the Thanksgiving message I anticipated writing when we purchased Island Vacations in June of this year, and the events have caused me to reflect in ways I haven’t previously. This year I am thankful for the strength of the human spirit, for courage, determination, charity, and compassion. Most of all, I am thankful for the opportunity that awaits us. The opportunity to be part of a rebuilding process, the opportunity to represent unique homeowners, and the opportunity to welcome guests back to our beautiful Island.

As for the conditions on Sanibel, there are clear signs of a rebirth. Glimpses of new foliage peeking through the storm-ravaged landscape leaves little doubt that Sanibel is bouncing back. By next summer, the Island will be as lush and green as we all remember.

Nature’s resilience can only be matched by that of the people building back Sanibel. We continue to be amazed at the speed of the recovery. Infrastructure is being repaired faster than we originally anticipated, which is a true testament to the effectiveness of our local, state, and federal governments. Debris is being cleared, and we will soon start the rebuilding work in earnest. Whereas we initially thought the Island would be out of commission for 12-18 months, we are optimistic that we can begin welcoming guests again in the first half of 2023.

Our office sustained considerable water damage during the storm, and we are taking the opportunity to revamp our office. These improvements will provide an enhanced guest experience and better working conditions for our team. While the office will be fresh, you will be welcomed back by the same Island Vacation team you have come to know.

We understand those of you who opted for refunds are waiting on your checks. Unfortunately, our stationery was ruined in the storm, and we have been waiting on new check stock to arrive. The new checks have now arrived, and it gives me great pleasure to announce that the first batch of refund checks has been processed by our accounting team and mailed out. As previously mentioned, we are tackling this process chronologically, starting from late September and October arrivals.

If you are craving some winter sun, please take the time to visit our sister company’s website – www.gcvacationrentals.com. We have limited properties available for the spring season, but you may be able to find something to quench your Florida thirst.

Dear Guests of Island Vacations,

I purchased Island Vacations of Sanibel in July, just a few months ago. Buying a company of the caliber and reputation of Island Vacations was an exciting prospect, and we were eager to build on what Fran had achieved over the past 25 years. Unfortunately, a mere three months later, Hurricane Ian wreaked havoc on the Island, and our operation was thrown into turmoil. While every company has disaster plans, ours included, those plans did not involve contingencies for having the entire Island resemble a war-torn region. Having visited the Island in the immediate aftermath first-hand, the visuals I experienced that day will be remembered forever.

As soon as the storm passed, we were able to take inventory of what had occurred and the extent of the devastation, and we made several operational decisions and acted. We housed our displaced employees due to their homes being damaged and, in some cases, destroyed. We mobilized quickly to provide property inspections to our homeowners to let them know how their homes fared. We reassured staff that they still had jobs, despite the uncertainty of when the Island would be operational again.

Unfortunately, one of our decisions was to hold on to deposited funds and apply them as credits for future reservations. Taking this position was an error on my part, a decision I regret. Therefore, we will now offer refunds to any guest requesting a refund.

I sincerely apologize for any distress taking this decision has caused. The decision was made in good faith, as our experiences with the guests of the Island led us to believe that this would be well-received. However, upon reflection, the decision on the dispersal of the funds should be for our guests and not ours.

I also want to apologize to the staff at Island Vacations. My decision placed them in an unenviable position and made them question what kind of person they are working for. I hope this reversal of policy answers that question for them. They are a large part of the engine that will drive our success as we advance.

Over the next few weeks, our team will reach out to you to determine how you would like your refund processed. The order will be determined by the arrival date, starting with the earliest affected arrivals.

Finally, please keep this situation from deterring you from visiting the Island of Sanibel or staying with Island Vacations of Sanibel. We will build back stronger than ever, and I sincerely hope you allow us to deliver you an experience like no other once the Island is open for business again.
