The CA Commercial Spiny Lobster season is in full swing! While everyone is stoked to be fishing lobster once again, there has unfortunately been an uptick in reports of poaching.

Poaching in the lobster fishery occurs when someone illegally takes lobsters out of your trap(s) either by diving or hauling the trap onto their boat. We want to make it clear that poaching lobster from a commercial fisherman’s trap is equivalent to walking into a small, family-owned market and stealing things off the shelves.

Poaching has a colossal impact on the livelihoods and families of our commercial fishing fleet; People might not understand that in some years, your October is your whole season from a production standpoint if the fishing never improves throughout the remaining months.

If you are out on the water and notice suspicious activity, for example if you see bubbles around trap buoys where divers are in the water, please take note and report it to us or CALTIP directly at 1(888) 334-2258 as soon as possible.

This Saturday is “FREE FISHING DAY”, meaning you do not need to buy a fishing license to fish on August 31!! This is a fantastic opportunity to give it try for the first time, bring a buddy, take the family, and thank you California Department of Fish and Wildlife for making these days possible, recognizing the ability to purchase a fishing license is a luxury not all Californians can afford.

The inaugural Santa Barbara California FishForLife.org trip was a huge success! An amazing day of fun, laughter, engagement, and of course, FISHING!!! From the opening ceremonies, to the red carpet announcement of the children as they boarded the fishing vessels Stardust and Coral Sea at the we all enjoyed and perfect day. The kids even got a surprise visit from a mermaid! So many people to thank including; Jaime and Jason Diamond, owners of the The Mayor of San Clemente Randy Rowse, Craig Shuman and Claudia Makeyev from the California Fish and Wildlife, Ava and Chris from .info the Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol for an amazing es**rt out to sea, and our amazing volunteers.
