Adelaide Sophia Claxton (1841 – 1927) The Party on the Stairs, ca 1875, watercolor and gouache. Adelaide Sophia Claxton was a British painter, illustrator, and inventor. She was one of the first women artists to make a major part of her living through the commercial press, selling satirical and comic illustrations to more than half a dozen periodicals. Claxton's paintings combine scenes of domestic life with literary or fantasy elements like ghosts and dreams. Her present painting depicts a little girl enjoying an extraordinary party! Surprisingly enough, she doesn't seem to be frightened at all among those ghosts in the 18th century costumes, but just stares curiously at them.
