The Excursion Club at UCSB is an entirely student-run, volunteer organization that is committed to getting people stoked on the outdoors. The club connects individuals by providing gear and opportunities to partake in outdoor activities as inexpensively as possible. We connect those who already enjoy the outdoors, as well as provide those with little to no outdoor experience with the knowledge, resources, opportunities, and support to step outside of their comfort zone and experience the great outdoors.
We lead a multitude of trips every week including but not limited to:
Skydiving, Rock Climbing, Tree Climbing, Surfing, Skiing/Snowboarding, Camping, Backpacking, Kayaking, Stand Up Paddleboarding, Yoga, Free Diving/Spear Fishing, Canyoneering, Hiking, Paintballing, Rafting, Dirt Biking, Mountain Biking, Downhill Cycling, Road Cycling, Archery, Bungee Jumping

In the 2022-2023 academic year, we led an average of 27 trips per week!
In addition to weekly trips, we have gear and equipment rentals available to our members for free. All gear and equipment has limited availability, and members are allowed to check them out for a limited time on a first-come, first-serve basis. Members can come check out gear every Wednesday and Thursday from 4-6pm at 1026 Camino Lindo during the academic year or during the summer quarter on Mondays from 7-8pm. Surfing 101: A Beginner's Guide to Catching Waves

Are you ready to ride the waves and experience the thrill of surfing? Whether you're a student at UC Santa Barbara or just someone looking to try something new, the Excursion Club has got you covered. With their gear rentals and knowledgeable staff, they can help you get started on your surfing journey. In this beginner's guide, we'll walk you through the basics of catching waves and give you some tips to make your first surfing experience a success.

1. Start with the right equipment:
Before you hit the waves, make sure you have the right gear. The Excursion Club offers surfboard rentals, so you don't have to worry about buying your own board right away. They also provide wetsuits to keep you warm in the chilly waters of Santa Barbara. Make sure you choose a board that is suitable for beginners, typically a longboard or a foam board, as they offer more stability and buoyancy.

2. Learn the proper technique:
Surfing is all about balance and timing. Start by lying on your board with your chest on the board and your feet hanging off the back. Paddle with your arms to gain momentum and when you feel a wave approaching, start paddling harder to catch it. Once you feel the wave lifting your board, pop up onto your feet and find your balance. Keep your knees slightly bent and your weight centered over the board. Practice this technique on the beach before heading into the water.

3. Choose the right wave:
As a beginner, it's important to choose the right wave to practice on. Look for smaller, slower waves that are breaking close to the shore. These waves are easier to catch and will give you more time to practice your balance and turns. Avoid crowded areas and be respectful of other surfers in the water.

4. Safety first:
Surfing can be a thrilling experience, but it's important to prioritize safety. Always surf with a buddy and be aware of your surroundings. Check the weather and surf conditions before heading out and be mindful of any hazards such as rocks or strong currents. If you're unsure about your abilities, consider taking a lesson from a certified instructor.

5. Practice, practice, practice:
Like any sport, surfing takes time and practice to master. Don't get discouraged if you don't catch a wave on your first try. Keep practicing and you'll gradually improve your skills. The Excursion Club offers regular surfing trips, so take advantage of these opportunities to get out on the water and practice with fellow surfers.

Surfing is not just a sport, it's a lifestyle. The Excursion Club at UC Santa Barbara can help you embrace this lifestyle and discover the joy of riding waves. So grab a board, suit up, and get ready for an unforgettable surfing adventure. See you out on the waves!
