In fact, this overlaps with another marine sanctuary, NOAAโs Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS) which protects another 1,470 square miles of ocean waters around the Northern Channel Islands: Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara islands.
So why all the protections? The area is a special place for endangered species, sensitive habitats, indigenous cultural sites, historic shipwrecks, and natural resources.
