Itβs the longest day of the year... make it count. Here on the Channel Islands weβre clocking 14 hours, 27 minutes, and 12 seconds of daylight on June 20th, and weβll be having fun in the sun all summer long! π
Itβs #WorldOceanDay! Did you know that the Channel Islands National Park actually extends 1 nautical mile from the shore INTO the water?!
In fact, this overlaps with another marine sanctuary, NOAAβs Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS) which protects another 1,470 square miles of ocean waters around the Northern Channel Islands: Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara islands.
So why all the protections? The area is a special place for endangered species, sensitive habitats, indigenous cultural sites, historic shipwrecks, and natural resources.
Today (and every day) we celebrate the individuals and organizations who support marine protection through research, education, conservation, and stewardship. For more on specific efforts, check out our friends at NOAA Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, Channel Islands National Park, Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, Santa Barbara Channel Whale Heritage Area, and Island Packers.
Weβre celebrating #CaveWeek at @channelislandsnps! πΆππ¦At Scorpion Anchorage, dozens of sea caves formed by eroding volcanic rock await your exploration. Join us for a guided kayak tour and uncover the fascinating world of sea caves, where geology, history, biology, and adventure converge.
