After nearly 40 years guiding groups over the vast coral reefs across our planet, there are always new discoveries .....perhaps less than two inches wide but exploding with color embedded in a stony coral we discovered the coral scallop!
As the coral grows so does this filter feeding bivalve which may serve to deter predation by the crown of thorn sea star that feeds on corals. As we admired the kaleidoscope of color, we noticed little beads glowing in the edges..... 100 or so tiny eyes! while some invertebrates may only detect shadows, it's thought that these sophisticated eyes act as reflective mirrors that may detect shapes as well as shadows.....
thrilling discoveries on the reefs of fiji onward to a jungle hike and water fall today accessed by long boats and traditional bamboo rafts.....
Our Belize Adventure 2024 ended with an incredibly powerful Mayan Healing Circle, much appreciated as we left on the heals of Hurricane Beryl and yes.....Kim Possible got COVID along with several others. Glover's Reef Atoll, what a magnificent place to "isolate". Thank you Ernesto, Rigo Juan, Aurora and Marquis Saqui of https://belizing.com/Nuuk-Cheil-Cottages/ for a profound healing circle.
We are making some changes to our program for 2025 adding more comforts.
May 19th-29th, 2025 Our New Women's Adventure to Belize
Always wanted to go to Belize but thought our program was too rustic? We are now offering double occupancy cabanas, private bathrooms and air conditioning throughout our program. Take a look at: https://bluewaterventures.org/tour/belize-adventure-for-women/
As our planet continues to warm, these adjustments will make our Belize Program a more comfortable adventure while still providing all the magic of Belize that we have offered for nearly 40 years.
Special heartfelt thanks to our BWV guides Malena Clark, Roman Cahero and Andra Nelle Farstad. We were so thankful to have the support of Avis Nunez and Ophelia Pop, our talented Belizean chefs while at Glovers and 12 year old Clavia Nunez, a future marine biologist and daughter of Avis who joined us....such fun!
Behind the scene, Merlene Castillo and Ricardo Castillo helped us navigate our logistics. Thanks to Captain Warren Cabral for providing us with transportation and the best fresh seafood around. Our Mayan Cave exploration was extra special this year under the care of expert guide, Francis Cucul.

Encounter with a humuhumunukunuku a pua'a
My fascination for tropical reef fish began with stories my parents would share with Michael and I after their visits to Waikiki Beach in the early 1960’s. Can you imagine how magical Waikiki was back when palm trees dominated the sky rather than towering skyscrapers?
Offshore a thriving coral reef flourished and exploded with a kaleidoscope of colors. Realizing our fascination with colors and creatures, our parents set up a freshwater fish tank with exotic guppies. My brother’s love of color and the beauty of Hawaii is expressed through his career as a renown Hawaiian artist. Inspired by those guppies, watching fish behaviors is one of my ultimate passions as a naturalist. As many of you know, I am a fish nerd!
Yesterday Nellie and I observed an interesting behavior. We inadvertently wandered into the territory of humuhumunukunuku a puaʻa , the Lagoon Triggerfish and also known as the Picasso Triggerfish. Closely related to Hawaii’s state fish, the Picasso guards a nest and will nip intruders. The investment in offspring such as we witnessed here is rarer among reef fish who more typically release copious amounts of egg and sperm into the water column and " hope for the best". This particular fish ignored Nellie then focused on my multi colored fins which of course added to our intrigued. We moved on once we realized a nest must be near by. In parts of the Caribbean, the Queen Trigger fish are known as “Old Wife”…..join us in Belize, a Women’s Adventure 2025 to learn why.
Aloha!
