It’s hot out there, we say. Bring water, we say. But how would you do that if you were living here in the 1400s, with no water bottles or backpacks?

The Ancestral Pueblo here would have likely carried water in ceramic pots like this one. With Frijoles Creek historically running year-round, the residents of the canyon could have filled pots with water from the creek, and then carried them to Tyuonyi Pueblo or up into the cliff dwellings—perhaps balanced on their heads as they navigated hand- and footholds in the rocks. During the summer, pots might also have been left out at strategic spots along the canyon walls, to catch runoff from the afternoon rainstorms.

Today, we wouldn’t recommend that you drink from the waterways in the park without filtering or treating the water first—so probably best to just bring your own water bottle (or pot!) and use the water refill station by the visitor center instead.
