The Santa Fe Trail (“The Great Prairie Highway”)

… ran between Santa Fe, New Mexico and Independence, Missouri. The original eastern terminus was Boonville, MO, but was moved further west to Independence. In addition to New Mexico and Missouri, the trail and its various branches passed through Colorado, Oklahoma, and Kansas.

The trail operated between 1821 – 1880 as a commercial, transportation, and military route. It gradually phased out with the growth of railroads.

The modern Amtrak Southwest Chief follows portions of the original trail. It is now maintained by the National Park Service as a historic trail.

Note: This is a cursory overview of the route. Many other towns and locations are significant to the trail. Feel free to add more details or comment on the distinction between Boonville and Independence.
