The Santa Fe Trail (“The Great Prairie Highway”)

… ran between Santa Fe, New Mexico and Independence, Missouri. The original eastern terminus was Boonville, MO, but was moved further west to Independence. In addition to New Mexico and Missouri, the trail and its various branches passed through Colorado, Oklahoma, and Kansas.

The trail operated between 1821 – 1880 as a commercial, transportation, and military route. It gradually phased out with the growth of railroads.

The modern Amtrak Southwest Chief follows portions of the original trail. It is now maintained by the National Park Service as a historic trail.

Note: This is a cursory overview of the route. Many other towns and locations are significant to the trail. Feel free to add more details or comment on the distinction between Boonville and Independence.

TERRAIN UPDATE:
Snowmakers have been hard at work on the Southside terrain! As a result of their hard work, Gayway, Cornice, Ripcord, Saddle, South Burn, and Lower Parachute will reopen!

The mountain is now 80% open with 72 of 90 trails open! We hope to see you this weekend!

We heard you loud and clear! Since you asked so nicely, Ski Santa Fe will be opening early for 2024/2025 season!

With the blessing of these great conditions, our new opening date will be Saturday, November 23, a break from the traditional Thanksgiving Day openings of the past.

Guests will be able to take a ride on the new Santa Fe Express High-Speed Quad, which will be spinning for Opening Day. We are making all efforts to open all lifts, including Upper Mountain lifts, on opening day. Full terrain openings will be announced on Wednesday November 20th.
