Started the first day of OPEN STUDIOS TOUR with a visit from long time collectors Deb and Kevin of Morro Bay. Look at this beautiful pantry they built for their tablewares! There’s not much I love more (work related, anyway) than seeing my works tucked in and comfy in their forever home. Gaaaaaa!

Today’s the final day and I are here with our studio and ourselves all tidy and display oriented. Our hair is brushed, we put on mascara, we swept, and we’re swerving up Oreos and grapes. You’re welcome to come by any day of course, but don’t expect the glamorous world we’re putting on for you today.

Chonky funky slouchy candle blocks. I made my escape from the wheel to pound, dig, and twist these into hand built submission. Cathartic.

You’ve most likely seen this type of drawing on my work before so not new, but I think this one is extra nice. Is it a soil profile map or a mixed use landscape for crops, pasture, fallow fields, and native hillsides? Maybe all of those and something else. The glaze is so so smooth and perfectly like those cookies from ages ago: iced oatmeal cookies? Yum yum!

The electric plug for the kiln did the nasty on me yesterday so some works will not be making it to the OPEN STUDIOS TOUR. There’s still a good amount of new pieces for you to see though. Hope you’ll stop by 10-5pm this Saturday and Sunday for a visit with me and . Also, just one block from us you can make another OS Tour stop and visit the maximally-creative .randall.artist.

I love this ochre glaze, but not everyone agrees. The emotions are strong on both sides. Fortunately it randomly gives me problems, otherwise I would probably use it way too often. Here it behaved itself and the result is kind of 60’s hip.

Heya’ dear friends and future friends! New work for OPEN STUDIOS TOUR, this weekend only, Oct 12-13, 10-5pm, at my studio in Santa Margarita.

Primarily new singular pieces I’ve been working on for a couple of months; all functional of course! I seem to have gotten in to making serving bowls so there will be quite a few of those. Kind of elegant, kind of groovy, all inspired by my love of soils, cells, and leaves.

My studio mate will have her studio open as well so we won’t be lonesome. Hope you can drop by.

Spotted in the wild: one of a series of serving bowls from many years back when my studio was in the Rainbow Hut, perhaps. These days I feel like bringing it all down to just the clay… quite often it’s most beautiful all on its own.

805 Magazine gave a few potters some nice coverage in the March Restaurant issue. It’s a pretty slick magazine that covers all the excitement of the 805 area code, from Bradley to Somis, and now a lil’ bit o’ Santa Margarita (small towns deserve a nod now and then).

10,000 thanks to and the other restaurants who have patiently trusted me to learn how to make good dishware. 😘

Installation is complete. Multiple vases will hopefully do a good job of greeting the guests at check-in. Really a beautiful hotel! It was a joy to work on larger pieces and I’ve fallen more in love with this glaze design which captures the layered landscape of SLO county so well.
