More than thirty years ago I read a book called Angling Baja. I was so impressed I contacted the author and we’ve been friends ever since. Thirteen years ago my buddy author Scott Sadil came on one of my kayak camping and flyfishing trips to Magdalena Bay in Baja. He fell in love with the incredible wildness of this part of Baja, went home and became a small wooden sail boat builder. He trailered his boats from Hood River, Oregon every year to explore, fish and write at “Mag” Bay. I finally was able to ride along a couple of weeks ago. We beach camped to fish the surf, then moved camp to a little island in a mangrove estuary. We caught fish, harvested scallops and oysters and ate very well. It was an amazing adventure to say the least. Most anglers go there these days to try for marlin outside in the Pacific, but I’ve always loved all the incredible abundance of sea life inside the bay. I camped on a sand dune island with my wife Theresa and her students every February for eighteen years to hang with the gray whales, coyotes and dolphins. Luckily, it hasn’t changed much.
Scott is the angling editor at Gray’s Sporting Journal these days, and is fly fishing all over the world. And writing more great stories.
