Walton County has increased the fine for going into the water during double red flags to $500 and is being strictly enforced. Obey the flag system...it’s not worth your life or the financial penalty.

Rip currents are dangerous and can be fatal to the strongest of swimmers. Please learn and respect the flag systems in place. Keep yourself and your kids out of the water on RED FLAG days.

🚩🚩 RIP CURRENTS ARE REAL!!! 🚩🚩

RED FLAGS ARE NOT JUST A WARNING THEY MEAN THE OCEAN PRESENTS LIFE THREATENING SITUATIONS

How to spot a rip current.
1. Rip currents usually develop close to the shoreline in very shallow water around a meter deep – just where beach bathers are usually found.
2. Rip currents usually form between breaking waves.
3. Stay clear of the dark, flat water under which the fast currents lurk – even though it looks more inviting.
4. If caught in one DO NOT PANIC. Do not attempt to swim back towards the shore, the current will tire you out, even if you are a strong swimmer. Swim parallel to shore until you are out of the current and then head in - something that is easier said than done.

A picture of the rip currents on Pensacola Beach (gulf,Panhandle of FL). The dark channels of water are the rip currents and the light areas are sand bars. This is why it’s so important to stay calm and swim parallel to shore (this means your rib cage is facing the beach; your head is NOT pointing toward beach).

Prevention save lives. Our beaches are so beautiful and it gives everyone peace of mind when you have knowledge about these potential hazards. Swim near your Lifeguards please, it’s always worth it. Stay out of water when the beach flag at entrance to beach displays RED flags.
