Recent Marquetry Class at the Two Rock School of Woodworking in Petaluma CA.
Today’s “breakthrough moment”.
Here's the video which somehow did not show up in my previous post. And yes, that's me playing the drums with my new knee!
Rough turning 32" deep big leaf maple hollow vessel.
In this brief video,I'm using a large spindle roughing gouge to turn the outside shape of this 32" inch deep maple hollow vessel. This is wet wood which is much easier to turn than dry wood.
I've been busy preparing for my class on bending wood which runs for 4 days and begins at 9 am tomorrow morning at our school in Santa Rosa, Northern CA. Here are some photos of pieces I have made over the past several decades. I have been fascinated by the technique of bentwood lamination since the early 1980's.My friend Michael Jean Cooper taught me a tremendous amount about these methods and gave me the confidence to pursue this discipline in greater depth. The possibilities are limited only by people’s imagination. I am very excited to see what my students’ imaginations produce.
Coffee Park
This is a Belated "Thank You One and All" for all of your wonderful happy birthday wishes!
Most of you by now have read about the horrific Tubbs Fires that swept through Santa Rosa the night of Oct 8th destroying virtually everything in it's path.
I now know that I have received the greatest birthday gift of my entire 66 years by having been spared the complete devastation that has unfortunately befallen my friends and neighbors less than half a mile from our home and shop.
Coffee Park was recently opened and I just drove through there for the first time since the Fires.
The photos and videos demonstrate the sheer horror of 50 to 70 mile an hour winds spreading flames faster than someone could run.Apparently dry brush and powerful winds fueled a fire that has now become known as the most destructive fire in the history of California.
Sadness filled my heart for all of those who lost everything and especially those who lost their lives!
I took some video as I drove through a few blocks because it was the only effective way to get a glimpse of just how widespread the destruction and devastation is.
Coffee Park now looks like a bombed out war zone. I checked my phone for distance and our home and shop is less than half a mile away!
Victoria and I have a new perspective on life. Anytime something goes wrong, we simply say "we still have our lives and our home"!
My heartfelt Thanks goes out to all of the Santa Rosa Firefighters and all of the other Firefighters from Berkeley and other cities that came to bravely fight this fire and all of the First Responders that helped save lives and stop the Fires!!!
Amazing as it might seem, our home and shop were spared and I have been back teaching classes. The students were relieved to be able to focus on creativity and take a break from thinking about the recent devastation.
This is a reminder that we should all have an attitude of gratitude for what we have.

World Wood Day performance.
This Chinese woodturner demonstrated old world wood turning techniques that were powered by hand before our modern times of power tools.
African Blackwood and Quilted Maple turned box.
In this brief video you can see my African Blackwood with Quilted Maple lidded box from all sides as it rotates on my turntable. Quilted Maple is known for its Chatoyance which means it reflects light when viewed from different angles. Most turners think I used a Rose engine lathe to turn the spirals. I teach classes on creative wood turning using low tech tools. For this box, I used the Robert Sorby spiraling tool to cut the spirals. I also love the point tool which I used to cut a V shape on either side of the spirals. This adds definition and a border to highlight the spirals. I really like the Dennis Stewart "Chatter Tool" which I used to create the texture around the base of the box as well as on the inside of the lid.
