We have found records of its existence almost 100 years ago and it may be older than those records. The original structure, a hunting cabin, consisted of what is now the living room and front bedroom. All of the other rooms, the porch, and improvements such as indoor plumbing have been added over the years. The Waldbaum’s originally purchased this property as a vacation hideaway and spent several
weeks up here each year. They brought up their own water in those days as the only source of water was the small creek west of the cabin. In the 60’s, Hippies found the cabin, and lived here as squatters. It was one of these uninvited guests who built the stonework around the stove in the living room. Ray found the little woodstove “Forest Rose” abandoned while doing his thesis work in Nevada and brought it home to heat the cabin. We think it is a perfect fit! When we first moved to Santa Rosa we lived in the cabin while we built our new house up the hill. Things were pretty rough then. No hot water in the kitchen and the wood burning cook stove and oven. The first Thanksgiving I cooked a turkey in the wood burning oven. Wow those pioneer women really had it tough. Keeping a consistent temperature requires constant attention and re-supply to the wood box. One doesn’t just throw the turkey in the oven and do other things. After we completed the building of our new house, we totally remodeled and updated the cabin to allow our guests to enjoy the rustic charms of country living with the modern conveniences we are all accustomed to now.
