Georgia Boys Fish Camp started many years ago by a โGeorgia Boyโ, Lawrence Butler, a plumber from Lakeland, Georgia. When he started coming to โhis little piece of paradiseโ it was just land on the very wide Dunns Creek, which used to be called Deep River, until someone discovered that Dunnโs Lake was shaped like a crescent moon, hence Dunnโs Lake became Crescent Lake. Deep River then became Dunns Creek. This โcreekโ is the only way to get from the St Johns River into Crescent Lake & Dead Lake by boat. Mr. & Mrs. Butler built the bait shop & the two story house (where it was rumored many big money card games were played in the evening in the downstairs restaurant after dinner). Mrs. Butler fed you breakfast, packed you a lunch, & dinner was whatever you caught that day. The restaurant closed when she was unable to run it anymore. The cottages or cabins were built as they needed more space to accomodate the other โGeorgia Boys & Girlsโ who quickly discovered how unspoiled & beautiful the area was, not to mention the boatloads of fish they heard everyone was bringing into the dock.
Getting out on the creek & the river is really the best way to see the โOld Floridaโ that is still here. This area is still in its natural state. Anyone who loves Native American history or is a Civil War buff can read about the many skirmishes in & around our area, including the sinking & raising of the โAmericaโ sailing ship. Yes, that one! Most of the land surrounding Georgia Boys is still undeveloped. Dunns Creek State Park, over 6000 acres, is right across the creek from us. Murphy Island, about 1000 acres, is just off to the right by the St Johns River. Boating down Murphy Creek can make you feel like youโre the only person around the area. Itโs all conservation land on both sides of the creek just about all the way to where it meets up with the St Johns River, which flows over 300 miles north from its beginnings off Vero Beach area as swampland & empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Mayport in Jacksonville. Palatka , just 7 miles north on Hwy 17, has some neat little antique and curio shops along St Johns Ave, just one block left from Hwy 17 (Reid St). You might also like to try the burgers & maybe a Pusalo at Angelโs Diner in an old railway Dining Car just over the bridge on the left. We are only the THIRD owners of Georgia Boys Fish Camp in all these years. When Mr. Butler decided it was time, he sold it to Tom & Mary, who ran it for 25 years. We bought it from them & have attempted to bring everything into the 20th, if not the 21st century. All the cottages have full AC & heat recently by way of Mitsubishi Central units, a vast improvement over the one AC unit & one gas heater we had. The cabins are clean & comfortable, but they still exude โfish campโ & not fancy resort. From 20 or 30 or more โfish campsโ on Dunns Creek many years ago, we are the ONLY one still operational & open for business. The Bait Shop is open daily from 630 am until 530 pm. We carry a full line of live & artificial bait that works the best in this area. We are also the only place to get gas, non ethanol, mid grade gas, for many miles around. We hope you enjoyed our story. This area is fascinating, & we are only 30 miles from downtown St. Augustine! We have lots more to talk about if you join us on the patio by the bait shop for morning coffee or afternoon chat sessions. Usually you will find a couple of the local folk who hang with us and make our lives so fun. These are the real anglers in this area. They have been fishing this river their whole lives & willingly share their fantastic knowledge. We hope you will join us soon. Thanks.
