with a fun fact of the Paul R. Tregurtha🚢. She was designed by the American Ship Building Company to fulfill two briefs:
-Bulk carrier
-Executive passenger transportation
With the second brief in mind, she was among the first freighters with full air conditioning, elevators, and luxurious décor. Built in two parts, her keel was laid down on July 12, 1979, at the American Ship Building Company yard in Toledo, Ohio. On completion, the forward section was towed to their yard in Lorain, Ohio where it was mated with the stern portion. The completed hull No. 909 has a total length of 1,013 feet (309 m). Over the winter of 1959-1960, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock, along with their subcontractor Trailor Brothers, closed and dewatered the Rock Cut in the West Neebish Channel of the St. Marys River and deepened it from 24 to 28.5 feet. Four drill rigs can be seen drilling blasting holes to remove the rock floor of the cut. Richard Krause photo/MHSD.

Prior to 1904, the channel was unnavigable rapids, as shallow as three feet in spots. From 1904 to 1908 the first, 21 foot deep downbound channel was constructed. It was deepened to roughly 24 feet by 1933.
