Join my parents and the Helen community for a special history night event before Alpine Helen ·'s Oktoberfest Thursday September 12 at the Helen Arts and Heritage Center reception 4pm - event at 5pm.
In 1969 my parents discovered Helen at the beginning of it's transformation into the Alpine Village you know today. My dad came to the States with an entrepreneurial spirit and a dream. He met my mother who is a wonderful artist and they created a beautiful and iconic European retail store known as the House of Tyrol for the Alpine Helen many of us remember of the 70's, 80's and 90's. Hear how my parents started Helen's Oktoberfest (great stories about the bands and such), Volksmarch and St Bernard Festival.
Even though the contents of the building have not been a part of my family for years, the fond memories of what it held behind the doors for me as a child will always remain.
As a child I would spend most of my days in their retail store. I knew every inch of town and most shopkeepers and residents. I played hide and seek with my brother in the Orbit clothing store next door and hid in the phone booth at the bottom of the hill or played in the Chattahoochee River. I grew up in retail and watched my parents work seven days a week for their American Dream.
Around age 12 I realized a few things which have shaped me into who I am today. I realized I genuinely loved people and interacting with them. I also have a great appreciation for things that are made by hand and would follow my dad around factories in Europe or tradeshows. I've also seen firsthand so many factories where textiles, glass, Hummels, cuckoo clocks and porcelain were made, all to be placed into a home and create a memory of a bygone era. I also learned to love everything in nature and have appreciation for life from my Austrian Oma (grandmother) who was also an integral part of Helen. I'm a firm believer that memories shape lives and it's why I love to sell travel. My parents worked so hard for "my memories". I wish Alpine Helen was the way it was back then, and am looking forward to hearing them reminisce. I am so proud of my parents. I hope you can come join us!
