Wander through Savannah's 19th century, where the sinister Yellow Jack prowled the humid air. Imagine a city gripped by terror as its inhabitants faced relentless outbreaks of yellow fever. Battling high fevers, jaundice, and hemorrhaging, the true toll of this plague went beyond numbers, leaving crowded cemeteries and economic ruin in its wake. Beneath Savannah lies a chilling secret world of mass graves, morgue tunnels, an underground mausoleum, and more. All silent witnesses to some of the city's most perilous hours.

Forsyth Park stands in the heart of Savannah, a lush expanse steeped in history and legend. From its modest origins as Hodgson Park in the 1840s to its expansion and renaming in 1851, this 30-acre haven has weathered the storms of time, war, and nature. As the sun sets and darkness descends, visitors often speak of an unsettling atmosphere that pervades the air, hinting at the deeper, darker history lurking throughout the city’s picturesque park.

East of Savannah, Georgia, Bonaventure Cemetery rests gracefully on a scenic bluff, offering quiet views of the Wilmington River. Originally named St. Augustine Creek, this 17.3-mile-long tidal river begins its journey in the northern reaches from the Savannah River and ultimately finds its way to Wassaw Sound, an arm of the Atlantic Ocean.

Dr. Eugene Corson, an early pioneer of X-ray technology, initiated his formidable X-ray machine with a unique ritual. Positioning his hand behind the plate glass, he awaited the telltale red glow from the radiation, signifying the machine's readiness. This act led to multiple surgeries to remove the damaged fingers and palms, leaving Dr. Corson with nothing but stubs on both arms. Having passed in 1946, many believe the handless man still lingers in his former Savannah home.

From 1857 until 1916, Harper's Weekly was the publication of choice for foreign and domestic news, fiction, essays, humor, and illustrations. The December 1, 1860 issue features an idyllic portrayal of the Entrance to Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, Georgia, brought to life by artist and travel writer Thomas Addison Richards (1820-1900). Richards' drawing intricately captures the cemetery's early existence, complete with moss-draped trees, arched gates, a rustic bridge, and a lone figure.

The Mercer Williams House is one of the city's most infamous mansions, where murder accusations fail to tarnish its owners. General Mercer was acquitted of Civil War deserters' deaths, Dr. Wilder walked free from pillow talk allegations, and Jim Williams was found not guilty in the death of a troubled twenty-one-year-old. Could it be a curse or merely a century-long streak of unfortunate events?

Conrad Potter Aiken of Savannah, Georgia, is laid to rest near the banks of the Wilmington River in Bonaventure Cemetery. At the age of eleven, his parents tragically committed murder-suicide, radically altering the course of his life. Aiken became a celebrated writer and poet, most notably winning a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award and serving as the United States Poet Laureate. Undoubtedly, his works will continue to have a significant impact on American literature for centuries to come.

"How can my fingers hold you? You are elusive?
Yes, you are flame, but I surround and love you,
Always extend beyond you, cool, eternal,
To take you into my heart’s great void of silence."

An excerpt of "Dancing Adairs" by Conrad Aiken from his book "Turns and Movies and Other Tales in Verse," published in 1916.

Taylor Square, formerly known as Calhoun Square, holds a unique place in Savannah's history as one of the city's original squares. The ward was established in 1851 and named for 19th-century statesman John C. Calhoun. Sited in original maps recovered from 1805, circa 1812, and 1813, the square is located near old burial grounds. A chilling reminder that Savannah is unquestionably a city built on top of its dead.

432 Abercorn Street is a magnificent mid-19th century Greek Revival building on Taylor Square (formerly Calhoun Square) within Savannah's Historic District. Constructed in 1867 for Civil War veteran and cotton merchant General Benjamin J. Wilson and his family, this opulent residence was among Savannah's finest homes. It is now one of the city's most mysterious sites, compelling us to look beyond its unfounded folklore and ask what really happened inside the house?
