When Quinn comes along on the tour he usually rides up front with me, but yesterday he really wanted to hang with this nice couple. Thank you to the Grefes from Nashville for being so nice to my dog and making his day even more fun.

Such beautiful weather today and very few people in the cemetery. Even better, Johnny Mercer’s plot got a touch up for his 114th birthday.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the one and only Frank "Sonny" Seiler. Many will remember him as the man behind Uga, the UGA mascot. Others may remember him as Jim Williams' defense attorney of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" fame or roles in various movies, including playing the judge in "Midnight". But we will remember him as someone who cared deeply for his family, his friends, the city of Savannah and the preservation of Bonaventure Cemetery. Sonny was an active and valued board member of BHS from 2008 until 2019. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and pray that they find peace and comfort in the difficult days ahead. Rest in peace, Sonny. You will be greatly missed.

Quite a bit of damage to Bonaventure Cemetery’s entrance this morning.
The main Bonaventure sign is completely destroyed and the Jewish gate has taken yet another hit. The pillars are OK but half the gate is on the ground. They are still looking for the driver.
Thank you Carli Luby Shehane for the pics.

My Great Grandfather, Henry Eason, photographed sitting in a chair, by Jerome Wilson at his studio on Bull St in the early 1890's.
Jerome Wilson also took quite a few pictures of Bonaventure before he died in 1897. He was one of the best known photographers operating in Savannah between 1865 and 1897.

Sherman's March to the sea effectively ended at Fort McAllister,
so, we will tell the story

Day #20-
December 4, 1864
(clear upper 40's to mid-60)
Confederate General Henry Wayne is relieved of commanded and replaced by General Lafayette McLaws at Rail station 4 ½ located at Oliver Georgia. McLaws fearing his flanks were being turned and his force would be cut off, ordered his men to retreat south to Station 1 ½ located at present-day Pooler. Despite the Confederate maneuver, Sherman's advance was unabated.

Left-Wing destroys the Central of Georgia Railroad station at Scarboro following the rail line in the direction of Savannah.
Right-Wing ended their day's march at Statesboro. A delay was encountered when a corps crossed a mill dam road that held back Horse creek gave out. The breach overflowed the road causing the loss of horse teams. Forage in the area was listed as light. Federals took this time to bury those that had died during the campaign.
Cavalry engaged at the battle of Waynesboro. Two separate barricades were constructed along the rail line leading from south to north into Waynesboro. The southernmost was attacked at 8 AM. It was quickly taken by troops flanking it. The second and larger barricade is located at McIntosh creek.

Kilpatrick decided to use a different strategy here. He decided to pound the center of the barricade and take it by force. With both flanks engaged, Kilpatrick used artillery and the 2nd Kentucky cavalry to batter and rip through the barricade. Wheeler's barricade collapsed and Confederate troops retreated back thru Waynesboro to the safety of Briers Creek. Kilpatrick entered Waynesboro saying "I knew I could whip Wheeler! I can do it again!"

Confederates retreated north of Waynesboro, while the Federals destroyed the wagon and railroad bridges into town. By 3 PM, the Federals left and headed towards Alexander. Wheeler's (CSA) cavalry for the battle was estimated at 2000 men while Kilpatrick's (US) was 3,700. Estimated Confederate losses were 250 men to Federal's 197 horsemen.
Equally important was the fact that Wheeler's men killed or wounded 200 Federal horses.

Dep Kirkland was buried in Bonaventure cemetery this morning.
He was the prosecutor in the first trial against Jim Williams for the murder of Danny Hansford in 1981.
In 2015, he published a book about the trial from his point of view called Lawyer Games: After Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. It’s a really good read, but there were three more trials before Jim Williams was ultimately acquitted in 1989.
Dep does not mince words in his book.
One of the first sentences is “the son of a bitch did it!”

We started the 2pm today with a watchful eye on the weather. For a moment there, it looked liked the storm would squeak by to the north of us and we would have some light rain. By section F at the Bottom of Plantation Circle, the constant thunder made it obvious that we would have to call it a day. Just as we were turning back, lighting struck close by and we picked up the pace to get the hell out of there. This is what we saw on the way out. An oak in Section A in the front middle of Bonaventure took the hit, probably about 200 yards from where we were.

Quinn went out on his first tour this morning, a little earlier than I was planning, but he ended up doing very well. There was a little bit of puppy energy and excitement in the beginning, but after a few plots he settled in and stopped attacking every pile of Spanish moss that crossed his path. By the last stop at the Richard Arnold plot, he was wiped out and ready for a nap, as you can see in the first picture. By the end of the day he had been bathed and had a haircut from the wonderful people at Bentley’s Pet Grooming in Habersham Village. He looks about half the size in the second picture after his trimming and he smells fancy again.
What a good boy.

Happy Georgia Day! On this day in 1733, James Oglethorpe arrived on the Savannah bluff.

During Oglethorpe’s treaties with the Creeks and Muscogee tribes, he was “invited to partake” in a cup of Yaupon or “black drink” with the “beloved men.”

Yaupon was frequently used by chiefs, priests, and warriors during special occasions like “going to war and making treaties.”

There’s a couple of places on here that I haven’t gotten to yet, but anyone whose taken my tour knows that the go to place for me and my wife is the Circa 1875. We just love that place!
I just realized we haven’t been there in a while and Valentine’s Day is coming up, so we’ll be visiting real soon. I’ll be dreaming of their Moules Mariniere until then!

Don’t forget to pack your appetite when you come to Savannah! Known as a foodie paradise, the city is rich in history, culture, flavor, and plenty of fine dining restaurants. Celebrate a special occasion or just plain treat yourself with one of these indulgent dishes. They're worth it!

I saw my first coyote yesterday around 2:15pm as we drove into Bonaventure through Section P. It was just before the Herman Meyer monument. I stopped the van so me and my guests could get a good look and it obliged by staring back at us from 20 feet away before meandering down to the marsh and disappearing into the brush.
I'm sure it's more scared of us etc. but be careful out there.

I'll try to get a picture of it next time, until then, here's a pic of Bonaventure section H.

It was the mid 1950’s (2 decades before SCAD) and what began as an effort to save one house quickly turned into an organized movement that went on to save an entire city.

Local journalist, artist, and activist, Anna Colquit Hunter, gathered six of her friends to block the demolition of the Isaiah Davenport House which was about to be torn down for a surface parking lot - they formed the Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF).
