It has been a while since we've posted, but I just received word that a travel colleague of mine, a very experienced and savvy solo traveler, was attacked while traveling alone in a foreign country. So we thought it would be a helpful reminder that we should continue to be vigilant.
Traveling overseas can be an exciting adventure, but it's important to remember that safety should always be a top priority. Whether you're traveling alone or with a group, it's crucial to take a few extra precautions to ensure that your trip goes smoothly. Here are some tips and tricks to help you stay safe while traveling overseas.
Before You Leave
Before you even leave home, there are several things you can do to make sure you're prepared for your trip:
Research your destination: Learn as much as you can about your destination before you go. This includes the local laws and customs, as well as any current events or issues you should be aware of.
Register with your embassy: If you're traveling to a foreign country, it's a good idea to register with your embassy before you leave. This way, they will know that you are in the country and can provide assistance if needed.
Leave copies of your itinerary: Make sure someone at home knows your travel itinerary, including your flights, accommodations, and activities. This will make it easier for them to contact you in case of an emergency.
Have a copy of your passport in the cloud somewhere: If something happens to your passport while you are traveling, you can access a copy which will help you get the ability to travel home though your embassy.
While You're Traveling
Once you arrive at your destination, there are several things you can do to stay safe:
Stay aware of your surroundings: Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Keep an eye out for anything that seems out of place, and make note of any escape routes or safe areas in case of an emergency.
Keep valuables hidden: Don't make yourself a target for theft. Keep your valuables hidden and avoid flashing expensive items like jewelry or electronics in public.
Use trusted transportation: Only use trusted transportation options like taxis or ride-sharing services that have been recommended by your hotel or tour company.
Stick to well-lit areas: If you're out at night, stick to well-lit areas and avoid isolated or unfamiliar streets.
Extra Steps for Solo Travelers
If you're traveling alone, there are a few extra steps you can take to stay safe:
Stay in touch with someone at home: Make sure someone at home knows where you are at all times. Check in regularly, and let them know if your plans change.
Avoid walking alone at night: If you need to be out after dark, avoid walking alone. Stick to well-lit areas and consider using a ride-sharing service or taxi instead.
Join a tour or group activity: Joining a tour or group activity is a great way to meet other travelers and stay safe at the same time.
Get travel insurance: Travel insurance can provide peace of mind and financial protection in case of an emergency.
By following these tips and tricks, you can help ensure that your overseas trip is safe and worry-free. Don't let fear hold you back from exploring the world – just be smart and stay aware of your surroundings. Safe travels!
