Unitas UNITAS fosters community and diversity at Union by supporting groups and individuals who create even UNITAS was established in the early spring of 1997.

Professor of Biology Twitty Styles, his wife Dr. Constance Glasgow, Professor of Biology Carl George and his wife Gail George worked with President Roger Hull and Vice-presidents Dan West and Linda Cool in the founding. A crucial intent of the organizing team was to create an enabling sum of money that would yield interest on an annual basis toward supporting diversity and community at Union Colle

ge. The two professors each contributed a cornerstone amount and then wrote some three-thousand solicitations to the students they had taught in their combined 62 years at the College. The money resulting from the letters and the two faculty members was then matched by President Hull to establish the UNITAS Fund; the initial amount was about one-hundred thousand dollars. A presidential advisory board was then appointed to promote funding applications from the faculty, staff and student body in support of diversity and community at the College. This group meets monthly during the academic year to conduct the affairs of UNITAS. Sixty or more events have been supported thus far. Lectures, performances, student study programs, teas, seminars, workshops, library acquisitions, luncheons, receptions and many other activities have received support. We believe that UNITAS is a unique institution among American colleges and universities. In a world of growing diversity an education is deficient unless those participating come to know and respect the wondrous array of people sharing the academic experience. We welcome you to be a part of it!

Dear UNITAS members,
Next week, during our regularly scheduled meeting time, we will have a special guest. Since working remotely last year, with feedback from UNITAS members and New Hires, especially Rose Patterson and Deidre Butler, we have been wanting to initiate a new aspect of UNITAS members where we devote some of the meetings to bringing guests. Last year, we did this partnering with the Minerva Courses.

In response to conversations with students and a general understanding of concerns impacting our community (on campus and beyond), I have reached out to a local grassroots organization that I have worked with extensively in educating people about Harm Reduction and ways to support community members who may come into contact with substances that are contaminated. This is timely regardless but also was highlighted by the recent emails from campus safety.

Please join us next week in person or remote (contact [email protected] for the zoom link)!

UNITAS is grateful to welcome VOCAL New York and Luke Grandis for a timely information and training session for Harm Reduction information and basic Narcan Training during our next General Meeting.

Membership is open to all members of the Union community.

Every year, UNITAS seeks to recognize members of our Union Community for their achievement in academics, research, service and governance. Please consider nominating a well deserving member of the Union Community for the UNITAS Student Diversity Leadership Award and/or the UNITAS Community Building Award. Please see the guidelines for each below:

UNITAS seeks your nomination of a senior for the Student Diversity Leadership Award, given on Prize Day in May. The prize is a great honor, and it comes with a monetary award. Click here and complete the form to nominate.

Please include examples of why the student should be this year’s Student Diversity Leadership Award winner. Friday, March 19th is the deadline to submit the online form.

Another UNITAS award is for Community Building, and the competition is open to anyone at Union, student, staff, administrators, and faculty alike. It comes with a monetary award, and it recognizes the person who has most effectively linked some or all of the various communities at Union into a joint enterprise, activity, or program. Click here and complete the form to nominate.

Please include examples of why the nominee should be this year’s Community-Building Award winner. Friday, March 19th is the deadline to submit the online form.

All of us at UNITAS—students, staff and faculty—thank you for your help in recognizing those who are working to make Union even better. If you have any questions please email Niya Brooks at [email protected].
