Attention Scott County Travelers! I wanted to share some important information with you that I learned from the KS Tourism Huddle. If you've been traveling to Eastern KS recently, you may have seen the Cashless Tolling signs indicating that the state is transitioning to cashless tolling. Starting in July 2024, there will be no more toll booths where you can pay by cash. Instead, a picture of your license plate will be taken, and you will receive a bill in the mail within 1-2 months. However, you can reduce this bill by half if you sign up for a K-tag and link it to your account. A K-tag is a small sticker that you place on your front windshield below your rearview mirror. It will be scanned as you pass through the tolls. K-tags are also compatible with other states' toll booths, such as Florida, Oklahoma, and Texas, with Colorado becoming compatible soon. After linking your K-tag to a bank account, your card will be charged monthly for the tolls you passed through. If you did not pass through any tolls, there will be no charge. If you already have a K-tag account, you do not need to do anything differently, but your bill will show individual charges for each toll booth you passed through, rather than one "trip" charge. To order your FREE K-tag, please visit https://www.ksturnpike.com/cashless-tolling. You can also purchase different types of K-tags that are not free but allow you to transfer them between vehicles.

The Kansas Turnpike Authority maintains 236 miles of user-fee supported roadway from the Oklahoma border to Kansas City.

Hello Scott City! This post is to inform all restaurants and notify fundraising organizations about a great opportunity. Scott City will be a host city for Biking Across Kansas (BAK) this year. Monday, Jan. 29 is Kansas Day, a celebration of our state's birthday and the anniversary of Kansas' admission to the Union. In 2024, Kansas turns 163 years old. Kansas became the 34th state in the United States on Jan. 29, 1861. Historically, Johnson County is older than the State of Kansas.

Fast Facts:
Nickname: The Sunflower State.
Statehood: 1861; 34th state.
Population (as of July 2015): 2,911,641.
Capital: Topeka.
Biggest City: Wichita.
Abbreviation: KS.
State bird: western meadowlark.
State flower: sunflower.

Fun Facts: Dodge City is the windiest city in the United States. Smith County is the geographical center of the 48 contiguous states. There are 27 Walnut Creeks in the state. There are more than 600 incorporated towns in the state.

Kansas is famous for: "The Sunflower State" was the 34th state to join the U.S.A in 1861. They grow a whole lot of wheat in Kansas, as well as cattle ranching, and it's right along Tornado Alley. It's also where Amelia Earhart and Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz are from.

How did Kansas get it's name: Named for the Kansas or Kanza tribe of the Sioux family that lived along a river in the area and gave it the tribal name. The name translates as "south wind people," or "wind people."

Famous Kansans: Ed Asner, Paul Rudd, Hattie McDaniel, Bridget Everett, Jason Sudekis, Annette Bening, Eric Stonestreet, Buster Keaton, Janelle Monáe, Cassandra Peterson (well known for her Elvira, Mistress of the Dark character), Kirstie Alley and Vivian Vance are all famous actors from Kansas.

El Cuartelejo is located in the beautiful Historic Lake Scott State Park.

This 1898 photo shows early excavations of the site known as El Cuartelejo in Historic Lake Scott State Park north of Scott City. The location was once home to the Taos and later Picuris Pueblo peoples who fled New Mexico to escape Spanish rule. The Puebloans lived among the Plains Apache who resided in the area. El Cuartelejo is the northern- and easternmost pueblo and the only known one in Kansas. To learn more about El Cuartelejo, go to https://www.kshs.org/kansapedia/el-cuartelejo-scott-county/12026

Love the dynamic lighting from the Keyhole in this photo of Monument Rocks! Another great photo by Jim Talbert!

A late golden hour shot from 2018 that I recently took a new look at. I wanted to emphasize the light through the keyhole and played around with various levels of darkness in the rock but after trial and error landed on this. Monument Rocks in Gove County, KS.

Best-selling Kansas author to speak in Scott City April 21

Roxie Yonkey, a best-selling author, will discuss her newest book Secret Kansas: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure, at Scott County Library, 110 W. Eighth, on April 21. Yonkey will be at the library from 1-3 p.m.

Patrons may buy a copy at the library. Can’t wait until April 21? Purchase a copy in advance at RoxieontheRoad.com/Shop.

The song “Home on the Range” is 150 years old this year, so the presentation begins with its story.

After “Home on the Range,” Yonkey will highlight stories about: El Quartelejo, the 17th-18th century Puebloan ruins located within Lake Scott State Park; the fatal fingerprint that led to the capture of the Fleagle Gang, and the legend of C.J. “Buffalo” Jones.

For those unable to make it to Scott City, the Fick Fossil & History Museum, Oakley, will host Yonkey from 3 to 5 p.m. April 19. Her presentation there includes El Quartelejo and a couple other topics.

How well do you know Kansas? Two rounds of Kansas trivia will show what you know. The winner will receive a pack of naturally filtered Longford Water.

The book tour is also a research opportunity for Yonkey’s upcoming books, Historic Kansas Roadsides and Amazing Kansas. The author is also preparing another book featuring famous Kansas women. During the presentation, patrons may advise her who she should include.

Secret Kansas is Yonkey’s third published book. She wrote the best-seller 100 Things to Do in Kansas Before You Die and the Kansas section of the Midwest Road Trip Adventures book. Yonkey and the other road trip book authors are writing Midwest State Park Adventures for a summer release date. She has written about Kansas for over 30 years and amassed numerous awards.

She has set additional book events throughout the state. Find them at RoxieontheRoad.com/Schedule.
