Today we observe Juneteenth, the commemoration of the end of slavery in the U.S.

The Salt River Visitor Center will be closed today in observance of the holiday and will reopen tomorrow June 20 at 8am.

SRPMIC Tribal Holiday June 19, 2024: Honoring Juneteenth 🌟

In 2022, the SRPMIC Council approved June 19th as an official SRPMIC Government Holiday. This day, also recognized as a federal holiday, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates African American culture and history.

On June 19th, we join the nation in observing Juneteenth, the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom.

Our Commitment and Why It Matters:
Juneteenth is a time to reflect, celebrate African American culture and contributions, and continue the journey toward equality and justice for all. Let's come together to honor this day of freedom and to learn and grow as a community.

The SRPMIC offices will be closed on Wednesday, June 19th, to honor this important day. Additionally, there will not be a Council Meeting held on this holiday. Essential services will remain operational to support our community.

Discover the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community beyond our tribal borders. 📍Mesa, Arizona A collaborative, site-specific exhibition “Passage” is now open at Mesa Arts Center. Artists: Cannupa Hanska Luger Tanya Aguiniga Dwayne Manuel (Onk Akimel O’odham) Thomas “Breeze” Marcus (Tohono O’odham) Anthony Collins (Onk Akimel O’odham) Chelsey Luger Artist Cannula Hanska Lugar presents the centerpiece “Something to Hold Onto”. An immersive installation made up of over 7,000 handmade clay beads, each one representing a life lost along the US-Mexico border over the last 30 years. The collaborative floor installation will be a pathway and guide for the beads to create an interpretive maze by O’odham (Pima) artists Dwayne Manuel and Thomas “Breeze” Marcus. Their contribution reflects the reality of O’odham and other tribes along the international border. The exhibition is accompanied by artwork and a pop-up educational experience by Tanya Aguiniga, Anthony Collins and Chelsey Luger.
