Mango sighting in Idaho for the Spirit of Boise balloon classic this weekend. His next event will be the Plano Balloon festival September 20-23rd, and of course he will be making his way to Albuquerque in October.

was another young man I met on the field back in New Mexico. I found myself mesmerized by the conversations exchanged between him and who’ve been lifelong friends.

Their passion for aviation has given me a newfound curiosity on what it takes to go up. Each one of them has spent an incredible amount of time learning the craft and proving their deserved spot among the predominantly older crowd of pilots in this industry.

I spent the past two weeks following , a young hot air balloon pilot based in Phoenix, Arizona.

I found myself craving sleep as we jetted off at 4 am to accompany his set-up. By week two I didn’t need my alarm anymore.

This young man’s heart for aviation was contagious, but more importantly, he sees the power of mentorship that youth struggle to gain access to. Not because it can’t be there, but because so many adults struggle to offer kindness over ego.

I resonated with him, thinking how long it took me to build my career in photography because of so many older, established photographers kept insight and knowledge away from me when I asked questions, in fear of competition or being surpassed.

“You’ll figure it out kid” became the anthem of so many of us.

We rely heavily on our incoming youth to solve problems, yet we struggle to create an environment they feel empowered to learn in.

What would it look like if they spent less time trying to prove to us they are capable and more time having the confidence and desire to solve those problems with us?
