A convention of fat robins partaking of the heated birdbath while the temperature is well below freezing. Bird heaven around here, with 6 bird feeders.

Our 110 year-old apple tree is the centerpiece of the back yard, and the source of the name. It had grown waaay too tall and overloaded ['before' picture]. Patrick of Grun Tree Care and his crew did a LOVINGLY, thorough pruning to bring it back to a size that won't jeopardize it breaking itself in a wind or snow storm [after pic]. He has taken it on as his 'project' and the quality of the work shows. Highly recommended, particularly for heritage tree preservation. PS: Trussing cables to be upgraded shortly.

Since its inception the guest house has received only glowing, 5-star reviews (more than 30). This one, however, took our breath away. Duncan and Sue write:

A sad day at Old Apple Trees. Given their age and extremely stressed condition it was inevitable.

The smaller, but most productive apple tree came down as a result of Sunday night's rain & wind. Last year we lost one major branch, representing about a quarter of the tree.

I had considered some method of propping up the remainder, but alas it's too late for that. However, we kept one major sucker in the hopes that it will eventually grow to replace this great old trooper.

At least the wonderful, large one over the deck is still hanging in there (literally, with 6 cables tying it together), and has a decent fruit set. So there'll be apple butter for our guests again this year.

My little table-top tree awaits the arrival this Christmas night of our guests, as will a dinner of Boursin-stuffed mushrooms, Chateaubriand, colcannon w/ gravy, & apple galette. A young couple here to celebrate their 3rd anniversary, and we intend to make it memorable.

During the travel lockdown, we are delighted to open the guest house to first responders and medical professionals in need of temporary housing while working the pandemic. It's just good to see the lights on and know that the space is helping out, rather than sitting empty.

Even in the short, dark days of winter the solar panels are able to power the needs of the guest house. (These are only half of the panels.) In summer they additionally power most of the usage in our residence next door. Electric bill$ now 1/6th of previous.

Old Apple Trees' very, very old apple tree overcropped again this year, by a ton. It was at risk of the extra weight pulling it down. So I thinned -- about 9 of every 10. And it's still loaded!

We are going solar! Soon you will be able to be off the grid while you enjoy being "off the grid" vacationing at Old Apple Trees.

Step One: trenching between the house and garage. Opted to do it myself rather than pay the electricians' wages to have the contractor do it. 9" wide, 18" deep, 36' long, 1½ cu. yds. shoveled, 5" apple tree roots, concrete construction debris, pretty sore muscles.

We treat our guests like family.* Wine, snacks, freshly baked bread and galette (by Susan, from West Seattle Farmers' Market fruit), and homemade jam. Plus eggs, bacon, milk, butter, beer & others in the 'frig. Homemade thin mints on the pillows (by Bob, from Guittard gourmet chocolates).

* The Family might say, "better than..." 😊

West Seattle is a sweet little neighborhood about 15 minutes from downtown and 20 minutes from the airport. We’re situated at the top of the hill with great sun exposure.
