The Burled Arch of the Last Great Race on Earth, which marks the annual finish of the Iditarod sled dog race, collapsed in Nome.

Mayor John Handeland said he had finished dinner Saturday night when he learned the arch had fallen apart. Handeland said he drove to the debris, gathered pieces of the Arch and put them in his truck. The Arch is tightly woven into the community and Handeland said many people are sad of the collapse. Wood rot is the likely culprit, he said, and the Arch is at least 25 years old.

Thank you for this wonderful feedback!

by Janet: We were leery to book with Alaska Active Travel. Having always planned trips on our own, or booked a group tour this was a new experience. In the end, we are glad we did. We had a fantastic trip to Alaska. They arranged hotel accommodations, transportation, additional excursions and hotel nights at our request. It was complete package without the cumbersome mess of a group tour. Before departure we received a detailed itinerary with vouchers, instructions, addresses, and phone numbers, as well as information and suggestions to help us prepare and enjoy our vacation. Thank you Alaska Active Travel

Dallas Seavey wins the 52nd Iditarod -
The Last Great Race on Earth®

Veteran musher Dallas Seavey of Talkeetna, Alaska, crossed the finish line of the 52nd running of the Iditarod in Nome at 5:16 p.m. today, claiming his sixth Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race® championship. With this win, Seavey has now become the most celebrated musher in the 52 years of the race.

Seavey had 10 dogs in harness when he triumphantly crossed the finish line to win the Iditarod 2024 title in 9 days, 2 hours, 16 minutes and 8 seconds. Of course, Seavey could not have made it the approximately 975 miles from Anchorage to Nome without his team of incredible dogs.

After a brief hibernation, a Fourth Avenue bear is back in downtown Anchorage.
The recognizable 300-pound, 6-foot-tall fiberglass grizzly bear was hoisted into position Monday morning, then placed above the entrance to a gift store where it has looked out over downtown Southeast for 25 years.
Casey Neumann, watching from the street, said the moment was an emotional reminder of her father, Bob Neumann, the longtime owner of Grizzly's Gifts and the Historic Anchorage Hotel, businesses located in the building at Fourth Avenue and E Street where the bear is mounted.

Howard Farley Sr. - one of the founding fathers of the Iditarod - died on Saturday at the age of 91, according to family members.

Farley was instrumental in getting the Last Great Race off the ground in the early 1970s. Along with musher Joe Redington Sr. of Knik, he brought together the mushers and financial supporters who made the first Iditarod possible in 1973.

Farley, who lives in Nome, participated in that first Iditarod and finished 20th.

Anchorage sees its snowiest November in at least 70 years

A squall that dropped barely an inch of snow Friday morning added just enough accumulation to make this the snowiest November in Anchorage since recordkeeping began in 1953.
Total snow accumulation at 39.1 inches, narrowly surpassing the 1994 total of 38.8 inches.

Friday’s measurement combined with several feet dumped in back-to-back storms last week and Monday set a record for the snow-weary city less than two-thirds of the way through the month.
