Celebrating William Grose: A Pioneer of Seattle’s Central District

Did you know William Grose was one of Seattle’s earliest Black entrepreneurs and a pillar of the Central District? 🏡✨

Arriving in the 1860s, Grose became a key figure in shaping Seattle’s Black community. He owned the famous ”Our House” hotel—a safe haven for Black settlers during a time of exclusion—and his 12-acre homestead became a foundation for the thriving Central District we know today.

📍 Grose’s Legacy Lives On:
- Grose Park (23rd Ave & E Spring St) honors his contributions.
- His homestead site (near 24th & Yesler) is a landmark of resilience.

Want to dive deeper? Check out the links below to explore his story and the history of Seattle’s Black pioneers. 📖

🔦Performer spotlight roundup part 2!🔦 Marisa Figueroa is the roadhouse proprietor, Si Daniels is betting it all, and Allan Phillips will remind us the importance of voting in this year’s Haunted History Tour! 👻🎲💀🥪🍺

When not serving as a tour guide or player in the tour, Si splits his time haunting Seattle’s Hillman City neighborhood and summoning spirits in the taverns of old town San Antonio. His day job is topmost font wrangler for a local tech company.

Allan moved to Georgetown in the late 1990s and was very instrumental in the creation of the tour. He has been a tour guide, and has appeared as several ghosts over the years. This year he will be reminding us all to vote in the local election as a savvy politician.

Marisa, owner of Bloom Bistro, will join us this year to hand out a drink and a sandwich during the chaos of the Roadhouse Ramblers.

🔦Performer spotlight roundup! 🔦 Brian Dougherty as Mayor Gill, Leese Cathey as the Castle ghost, and Andy Bookwalter as George Tucker return to the Haunted History Tour! Don’t miss this classic crew from previous Haunted history Tours!

Brian Dougherty, 20-year resident of Georgetown, is an avid lover of history. His engaging smile and warm personal approach have audiences gathering closer to listen to his character’s musings. He has been a part of the tour since 2006 in multiple facets from tour guide, ghostly greeter, production crew, and beloved bar owner, Jules Maes.

Leese Cathey has participated with us as a ghostly greeter, tarot reader, ghost whisperer and last year she portrayed Max the bartender. She has the uncanny ability to commune with the spirits and will let us meet from Mary who hears and sees all that goes on at the Gessner Manson.

Andy Bookwalter and sons have been involved in the Haunted History Tour since 2019 where they created an ensemble skit focused on the Tuberculosis Sanitorium located at the Poor Farm and Hospital. That was followed by the Potter’s Field disinterment in 2021, and in 2022 they reenacted the accident that caused George Tucker’s death in 1908.
