So. Much. Pollen. It didnāt happen until late June but spring finally came to Prince William Sound. With just 1-2 days of sun the trees virtually exploded. Not great for the allergies but incredible for the art. Thank you to for sharing this amazingly beautiful pic!

First trip of the season in the books! We traveled from Whittier to Seward, transitioning in and out of winter as we went. Crazy to see the snow holding on so tightly! Not pictured: WHALES! The humpbacks are out and making themselves known. So awesome.

Arrived in beautiful Passage Canal/Whittier and ready to start the season! It was a good trip north from Seattle (even though we had to wait in Sitka for 4 days for the weather to clear in the Gulf). Hereās to a great summer season for us all!

One step closer, installation of the new shafts! They heat up the shaft before sliding on the props to ensure a good fit. Everything came together perfectly! Nice to know weāll have reliable running gear this summer season! Getting closer and closer to relaunch!

A big shout-out to Port Captain Danny Blanchard and ! Thank you for the fabulous Outboard Motor Maintenance: Beyond Basics class. It was great to get my hands dirty cracking into an engine and to talk through various troubleshooting scenarios.

Not a glamorous pic but something I wanted to share. I fished this out of Puget Sound today. Itās huge and heavy - and quite the find if youāre into garbage collection I guess. I also found a bunch of big sequins and other odd pieces of plastic. Soā¦banner day? Ugh. Not really. (The cup is for scale only. I love a late afternoon latte when Iām picking up garbage).

Shipyard fun times have officially begun! Today we removed the anchor & chain. Our plan is to re-galvanize the chain and add another 100ā. And maybe clean up the anchor a bit š This will make it so much easier to anchor in those wonderfully deep Alaska fjords. Wonāt you join us?

We finally have our tree up over here - and it looks like the otters do too! They really nailed it with the lights. Easy to do with small dexterous forefeet with retractable claws!
Besides expertly decorating Christmas trees, they use their forefeet for grooming, fishing, and eating, but not for swimming. Their swimming power comes from their powerful large webbed hind feet. And also their tails. Though if you ask me, I think they might have used their tails to hang the star on the tree. Genius move!

Fat Bear Week 2022 is finishing strong - and FAT! We're down to two final bears and WOW, they are just huge!! The summer's transformation has been phenomenal. We already voted (901 all the way) but don't miss your chance! Polls close today at 5pm AKDT.

YOU GUYS! It's that most wonderful time of the year - it's FAT BEAR WEEK 2022! Ok, the official week of celebrating all things "big ursine" isn't until next week. But they are kicking things off today with a Fat Bear Week Junior competition.
To help get you in the mood, here are some pics are from our June 2022 visit to Katmai National Park. Back in June the bears were a lot thinner and eating grasses and clams. Fast forward only a few short months and they are HUGE and devouring all the salmon they can find. Isn't nature fabulous?!?

A whole lot of work and thought goes into any boat paint job, even more when the boat is aluminum, almost 60 years old and covered in a ton of unidentifiable old paint layers. This gives you a quick summary of the last 6 weeks of prepping, sanding, mudding, priming and painting. We love how she turned out! Primer coat done!! Top coats next. Wow she looks good. Weāre one step closer to being done and back in the water. The swim step is also getting a bit of a facelift. Sea Star is all āmudded up!ā After some consideration and experimentation, the shipyard decided to sandblast the hull to remove all of the old paint. There were just too many layers of unidentifiable stuff! We didnāt know what we were dealing with. When that happens itās best to start fresh and give the new paint the best surface possible. After the sandblasting, Sea Star got some primer (grey) and a coat of āmudā to smooth out rough spots and fill in any holes. Weāre getting so close to that first white top coat! So exciting! Sea Starās shipyard work is coming along nicely! Sanding off the exterior paint is about 50% completed. This will be followed by repairs and fairing out any trouble spots. And then we start building up the epoxy barrier with multiple coats of two different types off epoxy primers. To be followed by multiple topcoats (Awlgrip system) As for the bright work - thatās humming along too. Weāre about 50% done stripping the rails. Then weāve got to sand and get them ready for their primer and gloss (8 coats minimum - whew!). Oh this is some crazy big work! But sheās gonna shine when weāre done. I canāt wait! Sea Star is all bagged up and the work is in full swing! Trim rails and hardware are off and labeled, the swim step is awaiting my cleaning and the drop cloths are down.
