The ideal candidate has high standards yet is easy going. They’re eager to learn new systems and processes and is a self-starter who excels in solving problems aboard. The role can be physically demanding and may involve lifting, twisting, kneeling and working in small spaces. No smoking but light drinking is acceptable when appropriate. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and experienced, with high-but-reasonable expectations and a willingness to help with projects and mentor crew. This vessel is run family-style; no pressed white uniform, but we expect you’ll treat the owners and guests with respect and eagerness to help. You can read more about the boat, owners, and program at www.mvstarr.com.
Starr will be homeported at Waikiki Yacht Club for the foreseeable future. The engineer/deckhand/co-captain must live nearby (housing allowance and crew car provided), keep Starr clean and operational, and be available for day trips and emergencies. Typically, you’ll have several days’ notice for day trips, and a week or more notice for overnight trips. Day trips occur 2-4x per month and overnight trips are 2-4x per year. Exterior maintenance usually takes about one day per week. The rest of the time is spent troubleshooting and repairing problems, tackling larger maintenance tasks and upgrades, and helping the owner with other projects such as starting an adult dinghy sailing program or helping the local Sea Scout group.
