Nenana Ice Classic tripod falls early Saturday morning. Alaska’s most famous four-legged tripod fell through the ice on the Tanana River early Saturday morning, bringing an end to this year’s Nenana Ice Contest.

According to contest officials on social media, the clock stopped at 5:18 a.m. on April 27. Records kept by the contest indicate this is only the fourth time the ice has gone out on April 27, which happened in 1988, 2007, and 2020.

Even Anchorage’s hardened snow lovers have been tested this winter by storm-related conditions and closures. Some folks antsy for the sun-soaked greens and hard-earned warmth of summer might look back and mutter, “This winter has been the worst.”

Science might soon back up that subjective take on the snow.

In West Anchorage, meteorologists measure snowfall several times each day, and the data is getting interesting. As of Saturday, Anchorage is 4 inches from tying the season-long snowfall accumulation record. Only two winters have been snowier than the 130.5 inches that have been measured at the National Weather Service’s Anchorage forecasting office on Sand Lake Road this snow season.

Dallas Seavey wins his sixth title in the 52nd Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race

In a remarkable display of endurance and skill, veteran musher Dallas Seavey from Talkeetna, Alaska, emerged victorious in the 52nd Iditarod, also known as The Last Great Race on Earth®, marking his unparalleled sixth championship in the event's history. Seavey, leading a team of 10 dogs, crossed the finish line in Nome at 5:16 p.m., completing the race in 9 days, 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 8 seconds. This historic win cements his status as the most honored musher over the race’s 52-year legacy. Seavey's journey spanned roughly 975 miles from Anchorage to Nome, a feat made possible only through the remarkable performance of his sled dog team.

Brent Sass, aboard a sleek new sled, wins the Yukon Quest Alaska 2024 !

Brent Sass learned some hard lessons when he was run over by 16-year-old musher Emily Robinson at the Knik 200 last month.

Sass, a long-distance mushing champion with Iditarod and Yukon Quest titles, admitted the sled he'd been riding for the past decade wasn't ideal for mid-distance racing.

So he took the Yukon Quest Alaska 300 2024 as an opportunity to try out a sled better suited to this race. And it seemed to fit perfectly.

Sass won the Yukon Quest Alaska 300 and crossed the finish line in Central on Monday. According to the Quest's race tracker, he crossed the finish line after 46 hours and 48 minutes.

An Alaska company is working to build a better bunny boot. The military-issued boot is iconic footwear in Alaska, but new versions have never been available to consumers, Alaska Gear Co. says. They want to make a better version of the bulbous rubber boot that can be hard to find and expensive at surplus stores, said Sean McLaughlin, the company’s majority owner. Many of those original boots are decades old, and the rubber eventually wears out, he said.
