We wanted to take the time to introduce and celebrate Captain Raleigh Watts, an invaluable member of the Waterways Cruises team.

With his positive attitude, management skills, calm demeanor, and extensive knowledge of local waters, Captain Raleigh is truly a gem.

Captain Raleigh returned to his maritime roots with Waterways Cruises in 2023 after a 35-year public health career. He joined just as we acquired the Sightseer vessel, where he had prior experience.

Captain Raleigh’s maritime journey began in college as a deckhand on the MV Sightseer, navigating from Elliott Bay to Lake Union through the Hiram Chittenden Locks. From 1985 to 1991, he captained the Sightseer, becoming one of the few Seattleites to navigate the Locks over 1,000 times!

Dedicated to community service, Captain Raleigh supports nonprofits focused on youth, LGBTQ+ issues, and public health. He volunteers with Whole Washington, advocating for universal health care, and his public health career included helping African countries address the AIDS epidemic.

Captain Raleigh enjoys family time, exploring Seattle, and sailing in the San Juan Islands with his husband, Scott. He also works part-time with Metro’s water taxi service.

He champions the maritime industry as a career for all, encouraging diversity and mentoring young people at Waterways. Reflecting on his own mentorship 45 years ago, he sees opportunities for people of all ages.
