Our rose for today is Apricot Nectar, a floribunda introduced by Boerner in 1965. Clear soft apricot-yellow flowers with a sweet scent come in great abundance on this excellent rose. It grows large and make an excellent shrub which is rather resistant to most disease.
This is Royal Star and Garter, a Large-Flowered-Climber introduced in 2001 by Morey; J&P in 1961, Large peach pink flowers of rather orderly floral form, the clusters are small and the plant rather robust, but an excellent rebloomer and fragrant.
Here is Teasing Georgia, an English/Shrub Rose bred by David Austin in 1987. Large blooms full of petals are yellow shaded with apricot with light yellow on the edges. It is a tall vigorous grower resistant to blackspot. Moderately fragrant.
Our rose for today is Narrow Water, a Noisette introduced by Daisy Hill Nursery in 1883. Believed to be a sport of Nastarana in blush pink; same sweet musk fragrance as Nastarana.
Here is Madame Isaac Pereire, a Bourbon introduced in 1881 by Garcon. This is perhaps, the most extraordinary of the Bourbons. Large, intensely colored claret-pink, amaranth, and magenta flowers of surpassing fragrance, anywhere, anytime!
Today's rose is Star of Persia, a Hybrid Foetida bred by Pemberton in 1919. Deep yellow blooms of mild fragrance with golden yellow stamens appear in clusters. A nice rose for growing on a pillar. Once-blooming.
Here is Madame De Sancy De Parabere, a Boursault Rambler introduced in 1874 by Bonnet. The Boursaults as a whole are small of flower, though floriferous; this is the exception. Mme. De Sancy's flowers are massive, with particularly large guard petals of soft clear pink, and a mass of smaller, pinker inner petals, producing a peony effect. Much more sprawling than other Boursaults.
Here is Golden Chersonese, a Species Hybrid introduced in 1967 by Allen. Those of you who are familiar with a native California shrub called Fremontodendron or flannel bush will easily picture the effect Golden Chersonese makes with its wide, golden-yellow, single blooms on very short stems adorning a forest of upright canes. This hybrid of Rosa ecae combines that effect with lacquered, red-brown stems, the flowers appearing to bloom on leafless canes. Fragrant.
Today's rose is Herz As (Ace of Hearts), a Hybrid Tea introduced in 1963 by Tantau. Long pointed buds of blood red, elegant and ideal for cutting and show. Hardy, vigorous and upright. Little scent.
Today's rose is Duquesa de Peñaranda, a Hybrid Tea introduced in 1931 by Pedro Dot. Shades of orange and cantaloupe with an irresistible fruity scent. One of the greats among the unique introductions of Spanish Hybridizer Pedro Dot.
This is Cathedral, a Floribunda introduced in 1975 by McGredy. A rose that is not everyone's favorite; very brilliantly colored with creamy gold petals heavily overlaid vermilion. This is one of the healthiest roses we have ever grown; makes a superb show of color most of the season. AARS winner 1976. Little fragrance.
Today's rose is Anna Scharsach, a Hybrid Perpetual introduced in 1890 by Geschwind. broadly cupper flowers of bright pearl pink shaded with peach at the petal bases are loosely full, revealing a heart of large golden stamens mixed with petals. The color begins with a very soft peach tone, quite an unusually warm tint for a Hybrid Perpetual. The flowers gradually tint deeper and cooler in tone, especially at the edges where touched by the sun. Fragrant.
Our rose for today is El Dorado, a Hybrid Tea introduced in 1972 by Armstrong. Very fragrant golden-yellow flowers masked with scarlet on the outer petals, the color holding very well. Tall and floriferous.
This is Dreaming Spires, a Large-Flowered-Climber introduced in 1973 by Mattock. Very fragrant flowers, cupped and reflexed, tawny yellow opening to gold, fading to amber cream with a revealed eye of orange-red stamens. A modest upright grower. The "Dreaming Spires" are the towers of Oxford's colleges, a nod from Oxford's celebrated rose nursery, Mattocks
Here is Josephine Ritter, a Hybrid Multiflora Rambler introduced by Geschwind in 1900. Warm pink very double blooms on a once blooming climber. Unfortunately, no scent.
Our rose for today is "La Nymphe" a found Noisette. Pretty cupped flowers come in shades of pink from blush to rose, deeper toned in cool seasons, with a sweet Damask perfume. The blooms can be 3 inches or so across and vary in the size of their clusters. This is one of the Bourbon-Noisettes which has a very expansive growth habit and makes a good small climber.

Here is Ambridge Rose, an English/Shrub Rose introduced by David Austin in 1990. Soft, full flowers of a delicate apricot-pink, strongly scented of anise. The plant is bushy, and some people have reported it as very cold hardy.
This lovely rose is dr. Brownell, a Hybrid Tea introduced in 1964 by H. C. Brownell. A rose named for Dr. Walter Brownell, the creator of a famous group of hardy modern roses. Large petaled, loose but shapely blooms of apricot-yellow, with the poise of its parent, Peace. Fragrant, disease resistant, hardy, and nearly thornless.
Today's rose is Galway Bay, a Large-Flowered-Climber introduced by McGredy in 1966. Pointed buds of deep tomato-pink open to full flowers of soft vermilion-pink, creamy peach within, with a deeper veining in the petals. Mildly fragrant.
This is Cooper's Burmese, a very large tree climbing Hybrid Laevigata raised from wild seed collected in Burma. The dark green glossy leaves set off the pure white single blooms with yellow stamens, which are very fragrant.
Today's rose is Madame Dore, a Bourbon bred by Francois Fontaine in 1863. This is a rare winner; a Bourbon in the Malmaison style, compact, with La France-pink flowers that glow with light and are scented of fruit and ginger.
This is Aromatic, a Hybrid Tea introduced in 1970 by Belgium. A very fragrant rose which tends to cluster, flowers cupped, a blend of light and medium pinks with a satiny glow.
Here is Blanche-Vibert a Damask Perpetual introduced by Vibert in 1847. Charming small white flowers full of delicate petals, Damask-perfumed with sweetly scented glands. Soft green foliage, somewhat slender and upright in habit.
Today's rose is Chaplin's Pink Climber, a Rambler introduced by Chaplin Bros. in 1928. Flowers are rather large for this style of Wichurana Rambler with a glowing color effect; rich pink to scarlet pink. The blooms are double, flat, round in outline and are crowded together on the stems, overwhelming you with their profusion.
Today's rose is Chaplin's Pink Climber, a Rambler introduced by Chaplin Bros. in 1928. Here is Belle Amour, a found Alba reintroduced in 1940. A very warm pink rose with large-petalled flowers of rich, spicy scent. not typical for an Alba but showing many affinities to the class, including luxurious foliage. A very special rose and a graceful addition to the garden.
Today's rose is Fantastique, a Hybrid Tea introduced by Meilland in 1943. Extremely compact; to 2 feet. the flowers are a delightful pale yellow to corn yellow with cerise edges which appear to have been dusted on, as a sprinkling of cherry-pink feathers into the petals. Fragrant as well. Nice in a container.
Here is Curly Pink, a Hybrid Tea introduced by Brownell in 1948. A Walter Brownell seedling from Crimson Glory, with all the expected fragrance and beautiful, tight, imbricated, deep pink flowers which remind one of the blooms of La France.

~ About The Roses ~
TFoVR owns and maintains the historic roses in the “Lowery-Robinson” collection, currently located in Sebastopol, California, about 50 miles north of San Francisco. Rosarians world-wide consider the collection to be one of the most comprehensive multiple-class collections of old roses ever assembled. Of particular note – the Hybrid Perpetuals, Bourbons, Gallicas, Hybrid Chinas, Teas, Noisettes and Chinas are among the most complete in North America and the old Hybrid Teas include an extensive group of Pernetianas.
In addition to the historic roses in the “Lowery-Robinson” collection, TFoVR also owns approximately 1,000 books, pamphlets and journals on miscellaneous rose subjects.
History: Beginning in the early 1980s, Gregg Lowery and Phillip Robinson, with the assistance of others, developed the collection through gifts of plant material from then still-existent old gardens or small nurseries in the United States, from cuttings propagated from old plants discovered in California and other states at abandoned homesteads, old cemeteries and the like, and by purchasing and importing cultivars no longer available elsewhere from specialized nurseries abroad. This passion for old roses resulted in documented inventories of 5,412 named cultivars. While some of the cultivars cannot be found in the collection at present, TFoVR is working to inventory all existing plants and to obtain replacements for lost specimens deemed worthy of continued representation in the collection.
Public Gardens: Roses in the collection have been the source of propagation material provided to numerous public rose gardens, including: in California, the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden, the Historic Rose Garden in the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery, the University of California Botanical Garden (Berkeley), the Rose Garden at The Huntington Botanical Gardens (San Marino), and Hearst Castle State Park (San Simeon); in Shreveport, Louisiana, the Heritage Rose Foundation Garden at the American Rose Center; in Charleston, South Carolina, the Noisette Garden at Hampton Park; in New York, the Heritage Rose District of New York City; and in Sakura, Japan, the Sakura Heritage Rose Garden. Plant material from the collection also has provided replacements for old roses long missing from the world-recognized rose gardens at Roseraie de l’Hay-les-roses in Paris, the Europa-Rosarium in Sangerhausen, Germany and in the United Kingdom, the National Trust’s historic rose garden at Mottisfont Abbey.
Scientific Research: The collection has provided DNA for important scientific rose studies as well. Notable studies include the research of Professor Maurice Jay at Strausbourg University in France, the pigment research pursued by Dr. Yuki Mikanagi at Kobe University in Japan and the Noisette and Tea studies conducted by Dr. Nancy Morvello at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida.
