Our rose for today is Albéric Barbier, a Rambler introduced by Barbier in 1900. Glossy, black-green foliage provides a fine foil to the creamy white, formally double flowers of Alberic Barbier; perhaps the most elegant of all Ramblers. Though sharply barbed with thorns, Alberic Barbier is a desirable rose, for it is always very healthy and handsome year-round in the garden.

This is About Face, a Hybrid Tea/Grandiflora created by the great America rose breeder, Tom Carruth. Weeks introduced it in 2005. Tom's work in rose breeding stands out over all other American breeders of the past 50 years, and his innovations have brought better garden roses into our lives. Full blooms are orange-gold with a deeper reverse. It has a fruity, apple fragrance. The shrub is tall and vigorous.

Today's rose is Leontine Gervais, a Rambler introduced in 1903 by Barbier. Beautiful as this rose is, it never comes up to the vivid coloring shown in catalogues; on first opening the flowers are deep apricot, flushed with orange, but this is fleeting. A more subtle blend of soft apricot-buff, with a sweet, apple fragrance remains.

Our rose for today is Andenken an Alma de l'Aigle a Hybrid Musk introduced in 1948 by Kordes. such a name for a simple rose! Perhaps if the German were translated to French it would roll off the tongue better; Andenken means souvenir. Large, cupped, light pink flowers, blush at the base open casual and blowzy, and fragrant! Rather out of the mould of most Hybrid Musks.

Today's rose is Blush Noisette, a Noisette introduced in 1817 by Noisette. If the name is correct, this is the original offspring of Champney's Pink Cluster raised in France and portrayed by Redoute. In any event it is an excellent rose, very fragrant, with all the Noisette charm. A moderate shrub or pillar, it is rarely without flowers.
