The staff was friendly and excellent. The rail cars are spacious and comfortable with hearty snack provided and full bar available. The canyon ride while beautiful, would likely be best appreciated in any but the hottest months … today being particularly hot for the Verde valley.
But still very comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable. Walk between your seating car and the outside open car, chat with other guests. A good day-trip to consider when visiting Sedona and the local area!

I finally found this sandwich cafe open! I’ve walked by here many times, I guess mostly on weekends when I am typically in town. Turns out they are open every weekday, Monday to Friday. 10am-2pm.

So if you find yourself here in during the week, stop in for a
Portions are generous. Bring your appetite or a friend to share with. And ask for extra napkins!

Some phots from a couple hikes last weekend... Oak Creek (Huckaby / Jim Thompson Trail), and the Margs Draw-Twin Buttes Loop. Its tough to find myself in Sedona during inclement / gloomy weather - I am so often thwarted by clear blue skies.... I know.... but I love the more dramatic light and structure:

I did a great hike yesterday-twin buttes loop: start at broken arrow trail head. Go counter clockwise around using trails: hog wash, peccary, mystic, chapel, little horse to chicken point then back down on broken arrow with alternate options to take 1. Broken arrow all the way back or 2. High on the hog, twin buttes trail or 3. high on the hog, hog Heaven, hog wash back to the start.

Total loop 5-6 miles depending on options taken. Views of everything!

(Ok, the map shows I added a stick to Make a lollipop loop. I like to start at this little unknown parking lot up from circle K. Go up to Margs Draw and then south to broken arrow. That made the effort over 9 miles which wouldn’t be my recommendation to many people … starting from Brook arrow trail head, if there is space and you don’t mind a little dirt road access makes a more reasonable distance. )

Visiting Sedona? Looking for authentic, local, good vibes? Look for the regularly planned open dancing and drum circles that occur at both Yavapai vista and Huckaby trail head on various weeknight evenings. Might have to do a little search for schedule, or just ask and I can help.

It is rare that I bother with the crowds at the but last night I was hopeful for some storm clouds, lightning and a potentially amazing sunset. Sadly none of that happened … The typical evening, just as the sun dropped below the middle shelf of clouds, where I hoped it would light up the underside of the clouds hanging over the , there arose a new cloud barrier in the horizon to block the magic moment!
Fortunately, all was not lost! Since CandiceFromNebraska snuck this shot of and me and then shared it with us. Still a pretty nice show, despite the lack of brilliant color.

Marg's Draw... not on any top ten hikes in Sedona lists or guide books. The trail on all maps meanders from Schnebly hill road near the Huckaby trail head, along the front side of the rocks facing Uptown Sedona and parallels HW179 to spill out at the Broken Arrow trail head.... meh! No wonder it doesn't make any top ten lists, right!
But look at that area, skirting around Snoopy rock and a broad valley towards Munds mountain.... surely there must be some fun exploring back there! So, the dogs and I set off to explore that corner this morning.
On the way to Broken arrow, there is a side trail that comes up from Sombart lane, on SR179 by the Circle K.... when you get to the junction, I guess you are supposed to keep going to Broken Arrow... but wait, there is more than a game trail stemming up from that junction into the true Marg's draw watershed.... and its not a thin trail.... and its not on any other maps. That's where we are going.
The detail and complexity along the walls of the cirque beneath snoopy are far more complex and colorful than you can see from the road! And while the trail thins a bit, down to a nice single track, it keeps heading back into the cirque. Deeper and further back we go and I see a "Submarine-rock" like twin plateau of red rock.... that's where we are going. Its pretty cool. No-one is back here. Tons of javelina sign, and other cat foot prints.
We stop and play on the football field slab of rock. I suspect this trail continues around the cirque and could probably make it all the way over to Submarine rock and back down broken arrow.... but I decide to save that for another day to explore what I expect is an amazing loop trail!
But, nobody knows about it! Its not on anyone's top ten list! Don't go there.... oh yea, its so infrequently travelled, I found someone feeling comfortable camping back there... Illegal camping in the wilderness area, but seemed like a clean, respectful camp. (except for the open fire he/they have been using....
Oh, this also ranks high on my list for great hike's with kids! Very mellow grade, no cliffy exposure, and you are looking at Snoopy rock!

It is with mixed feelings that I share these photos … views soon to be lost from these particular vantage points when new Jordan Lofts apartments are planned to be built in the very fields in the foreground.
On the one hand, it’s not the end of spectacular views in Sedona, one need only turn around or walk a little further to find another. But on the other hand, I have watched herd of deer wander in this grass and munch on the tree leaves. I’ve seen groups of bird watchers frequent this field to observe a likely impressive collection of local and migrating birds that enjoy this open space. And then there are the javelina that no doubt spend time in the heart of summer shading themselves in the canopy of these trees and bushes.
But alas, Sedona does have a housing shortage! And affordable living is the cornerstone of much of this cities struggles with the explosion of its tourist economy … but I digress. You can’t have them both, a quiet neighborly quickly torn amongst a magnificent natural setting… and at the same time, a burgeoning, profitable tax base with full local employment, Jeep tours and off road excursions at your finger tips….

There is a problem in Sedona … certain trails and destinations are overcrowded. Look at any top ten list of Sedona trails and you’ll see all the same trails in every list. Instead, Pick up a trail map. Pick a canyon trail that Doesn’t end in a selfie line up! I haven’t been on a disappointing trail in yet! On this trail pictured here, I was alone. Didn’t see another person. Had this beautiful red rock slab with panoramic views to myself. Need a recommendation? Just ask.

One of the most highly regarded restaurants in Sedona is I tried a few years ago to get in the door at the old location. Now, with their new location a couple short blocks from our place here it’s only a matter of time. However, I did recently discover that they take “to-go” orders by phone. So last night I indulged, walked to pick it up and returned home to enjoy.
Note the food photo is re-plated at home- so presentation is likely less fantastic. But the taste was wonderful, fresh, perfectly prepared! But the Mexican chocolate pie, (not pictured) was A-MA-Zing!!!
So come visit, make a reservation at Elote, and enjoy
