Marg's Draw... not on any top ten hikes in Sedona lists or guide books. The trail on all maps meanders from Schnebly hill road near the Huckaby trail head, along the front side of the rocks facing Uptown Sedona and parallels HW179 to spill out at the Broken Arrow trail head.... meh! No wonder it doesn't make any top ten lists, right!
But look at that area, skirting around Snoopy rock and a broad valley towards Munds mountain.... surely there must be some fun exploring back there! So, the dogs and I set off to explore that corner this morning.
On the way to Broken arrow, there is a side trail that comes up from Sombart lane, on SR179 by the Circle K.... when you get to the junction, I guess you are supposed to keep going to Broken Arrow... but wait, there is more than a game trail stemming up from that junction into the true Marg's draw watershed.... and its not a thin trail.... and its not on any other maps. That's where we are going.
The detail and complexity along the walls of the cirque beneath snoopy are far more complex and colorful than you can see from the road! And while the trail thins a bit, down to a nice single track, it keeps heading back into the cirque. Deeper and further back we go and I see a "Submarine-rock" like twin plateau of red rock.... that's where we are going. Its pretty cool. No-one is back here. Tons of javelina sign, and other cat foot prints.
We stop and play on the football field slab of rock. I suspect this trail continues around the cirque and could probably make it all the way over to Submarine rock and back down broken arrow.... but I decide to save that for another day to explore what I expect is an amazing loop trail!
But, nobody knows about it! Its not on anyone's top ten list! Don't go there.... oh yea, its so infrequently travelled, I found someone feeling comfortable camping back there... Illegal camping in the wilderness area, but seemed like a clean, respectful camp. (except for the open fire he/they have been using....
Oh, this also ranks high on my list for great hike's with kids! Very mellow grade, no cliffy exposure, and you are looking at Snoopy rock!
