Overlooking the Hoover Dam, the arching, concrete-steel composite Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge was the first of its kind to be built in the US. It’s the largest single-arch bridge in North America and the widest in the concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere.

Hermits Rest was originally built as a rest area – the last stop for travelers heading down the rocky, unmaintained Hermit Trail and into the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. It’s also a great place to stop and enjoy the sunset.

Desert bighorn sheep, pictured here, are found roaming throughout the Valley of Fire. Only rams (males) have the large curved horns they’re named for; ewes (females) have short horns with slight curvature.

The Honanki Heritage Site is one of the largest cliff dwellings of the Red Rock country. It was home to the ancestors of the Hopi, and here, they prepared meals, raised their families and made tools. The dwellings are somewhat difficult to find – they’re built into the canyon walls. But if you can spot them, you can also spot rock art of pictographs and petroglyphs, dating to 5000 B.C.

The Techatticup gold mine in Eldorado Canyon, uncovered by Spaniards in the late 18th century, produced millions of dollars while shootouts, murder and theft became the norm in the streets overhead.

The area’s lawlessness once reached a point that federal troops were stationed nearby to establish and maintain order!
