Late September: See the first foliage turning on our highest summits and rocky slopes above 5,000 ft.
Early October: Head to elevations above 4,000 ft including Sugar Mountain, Grandfather Mountain and Linn Cove Viaduct area of the Blue Ridge Parkway for the most color.
Mid October: Most of the Blue Ridge Parkway in our area peaks with fall color - 3,000 feet elevation.
Late October: Our valleys and views from the Parkway into the valleys are the most vibrant.

Yesterday someone commented on a post insinuating that the Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains aren't "real mountains," presumably because they're nowhere near as tall as the Rockies and other ranges out west.

What they don't understand is that the Appalachians are among the oldest mountain ranges in the world. They've been gradually eroded and worn down over countless centuries.

But scientists believe that they may have originally been as tall as the Himalayas! While other mountain ranges may be more dramatic, we believe that NONE are more beautiful than the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Appalachian range.
