This scene, to me, represents an ideal January day in Gatlinburg. There's snow, but not too much, and traffic is drastically lighter. I'm always in love with those mountains, though!😍

Important to know for the winter in the Park.

Important to know for the winter in the Park.

Check it out. Flat Ranger Stanley wants to let you all know how to prepare for winter weather while visiting the park properly.

Stanley: ❄️Winter has settled into Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and it's a breathtaking wonderland out there! If you’re planning a visit, be sure to bundle up with warm layers, a waterproof jacket, gloves, and a hat to stay cozy in the cold temperatures. Plan to have extra snacks, blankets, jumper cables, and a big thermos of your favorite hot cocoa mix in your car. Road conditions can get dicey with icy patches, so drive with caution when heading to higher elevations, and consider having alternative locations to visit as road closures may occur. Stay safe and enjoy the Smokies!

Enjoy the crisp mountain air as you sip you coffee on the back deck next to the fire. Or enjoy the warmth of the fireplace in the living room, while planing your day in the Great Smoky Mountains. Our cabin knocks on the back-door of the park and is just a quick 15 minute ride down the rode through Wears Valley. Enjoy the changing of the leaves the wildlife playing in the meadows.

This Mercury Retrograde season, I'm thinking of the famous words "It's better to light a candle than curse the darkness" from William Lonsdale Watkinson. πŸ•―
Yes, each Mercury Retrograde, it's easy to feel some dread and frustration. It's helpful to be patient, confirm details, be kinder and aim for clarity and understanding with others, recheck details, allow extra time for travel, back up your computer, and be extra mindful.
And. ⭐️ It's also helpful to remember the gifts of Mercury Retrograde, which blesses us this meaningful time for focusing within and focusing on the "re" invitations, like rest, revise, revisit, reflect, renew, recommit, retreat and rediscover.
Blessings on this gift of intentionally reflective time,
Erika

Spotlight Species: Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly (Battus philenor)

Great Smoky Mountains is home to over 1,900 species of butterflies, moths, and skippers, including the Pipevine Swallowtail. This butterfly species is fairly common throughout the park and can be most commonly found mud-puddling near streams or in open, grassy areas. If you see a Pipevine Swallowtail mud-puddling on the ground, you are most likely observing a male of the species which is taking up nutrients from the soil.

The Pipevine Swallowtail can be toxic and distasteful to some bird species; for this reason, other butterflies mimic the Pipevine's appearance. The Spicebush Swallowtail is one of the prime examples of this mimicry. When trying to identify a Pipevine Swallowtail versus a Spicebush Swallowtail, be sure to observe the underside of its wings. The Pipevine Swallowtail will have one row of orange spots on the underside of its wings, while the Spicebush will have two rows of orange spots on the underside of its wings.

Take a guess! Is the image a Spicebush or Pipevine Swallowtail?

Also, please show us your best Great Smoky Mountains butterfly pictures!
