Wildlife Wednesday's: Let's Talk About Skate Fish!

Did you know that skate fish are like the superheroes of the sea? These fascinating creatures are closely related to sharks and rays, gliding through the ocean with their wing-like pectoral fins. They can even "walk" on the seabed using their pelvic fins! Skates are masters of camouflage, blending into the ocean floor to avoid predators. Plus, some species have a nifty trick up their sleeve—they lay eggs in protective cases known as "mermaid's purses."

From time to time, we pull one of these bad asses up, take some pictures and release. Super cool to look at up close! Their eyes look pretty neat as well when you have a front row seat! Next time you're exploring marine life, keep an eye out for these incredible underwater acrobats!

🦭Wildlife Wednesday's: Amazing Sea Lions of Alaska!🦭

Did you know that Alaskan sea lions are some of the most playful and curious marine mammals? These social creatures love to sunbathe on rocky shores and can often be seen in large, noisy groups....as you can see from the video we caught a few days ago while on the Nauti Girl with Alaska Dream Charters. They’re incredible swimmers, reaching speeds up to 25 mph, and can dive to depths of 600 feet! Sea lions communicate with a variety of sounds, including barks, growls, and roars. Plus, their whiskers are super sensitive, helping them detect prey in the dark, cold waters of Alaska.

Did you know that ADC also does sightseeing tours (half day or full day) and combo sightseeing/fishing (full day) trips. Contact us today to find availability!

WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY'S: The Sea Otter

Sea Otters are a very common mammal here in the Resurrection Bay area. Approximately 90 percent of the world’s sea otters live in coastal Alaska. Eating 25% of their body weight in food every day, they eat things like sea urchins, crabs, clams, mussels, octopus, fish, and other marine invertebrates.

Sea otters have the thickest fur of any animal. Unlike most other marine mammals, otters lack a blubber layer. To keep warm, sea otters spend a large portion of their days grooming and conditioning their fur. This traps air and heat next to their skin.

An otter’s lung capacity is 2.5 times greater than that of similar-sized land mammals. Sea otters have been known to stay submerged for more than 5 minutes at a time.

The otter is one of the few mammals that use tools. A sea otter’s tool of choice: typically a rock that can be used as a hammer or anvil to break open hard-shelled prey. Ever wonder where otters actually store these tools for safe keeping? They have a loose patch of skin under their armpit to store both the food they’ve foraged and their rock to crack it open.

Otters might look soft and cuddly but remain dangerous wild animals. Otters have strong teeth and a powerful bite. So, whether you see an otter on land or at sea, be sure to maintain a safe distance of at least 5 kayak lengths or 60 feet from the otters. If an otter notices you, it probably means you’re too close. So watch, observe, take pictures, but don't try and take one home for a pet!

You can see them in the harbor sometimes, but definitely see them on a boat!
